It is normal for the belts on this model to be loose. Normally the noise that you are hearing is either the damper (a white plastic type material, comes in a kit) or the pump making the noise. Take the belt off the pump and put it into a spin cycle and see if you hear it. If so ck the tub bearing for rust or leaking and the damper for wear. If you don't here it, ck the pump.

SOURCE: How to adjust new belt on maytag washing

sounds like you have a bad transmission. can you lift the top up so you can see what it is doing when it is trying to spin. does it adgetate and spin at the same time? If yes you have a bad transmission. also if you get 2 people one looking inside of the drum and the other turning the big pulley in one direction it should turn the whole drum in the other the agetator should go back and forth. Tell me what happens thanks.

My Maytag top load washer makes a squealing noise during sensing only. There is no noise during washing or during spinning. It is about 3 years old.

A squealing noise during the sensing cycle of your Maytag top-load washer can be caused by a number of factors. Here are some common reasons and steps you can take to resolve the issue:
  1. Loose belt - The noise could be caused by a loose or worn belt that needs to be tightened or replaced. You may need to remove the front panel of the washer to access the belt.
  2. Idler pulley - If the idler pulley that keeps tension on the belt is worn or damaged, it can cause a squealing noise. Replace the idler pulley if necessary.
  3. Bearing - A worn bearing in the tub can cause a squealing noise. Replacing the bearing will typically require disassembling the washer.
  4. Drive motor - If the drive motor is worn or damaged, it can cause a squealing noise. Replace the drive motor if necessary.
If you're not comfortable diagnosing and repairing the issue yourself, it's best to contact a qualified appliance repair technician for assistance.

Check with the belt off that the bowl will turn freely, if not check drum bearings or something caught between inner & outer bowl. Make sure when you fit new belt it is adjusted to the right tension or it will slip & burn.

Squeal that sounds like belt spippage

The motor slides back and forth so there is know way to tighten the belt. The new  belt is needed if your old one shows any ware or if has shiny look to it which would mean its been getting hot and slipping.

Washer won't spin

Could be a worn belt,
Empty the machine and tilt backwards, you may need some help to do this.
Remove the belt and check, some times these appear OK but may have stretched.
Chech the agitator pully, try to rotate, will only move in one direction, see agitator moving as you do, get the person helping you to see this.
Check the motor moves freely on the tensioner, motor will appear to move 2".
Fit a new belt and try.

Loud squeal during wash and spin cycles, maytag atlantis washer

Squealing normal occurs due to belt slippage. I would check your belts (look for cracks. Check the belt tension as well, most washers have an adjustment, normally on the motor that allows you to increase the tension of the belt.

If part of a belt gets torn and it is long enough, it will hit any part of the washing machine within range and make a clicking noise at every revolution of the motor.

I am pretty sure you need new belts. You should be able to remove a few screws and open the back cover. Between the pulleys there is a tensioner...loosen that so you can remove the belt easily. replace it with a new belt and adjust the tension.

hope this helps
