I have a 2nd phone number (not a separate line) thru verizon which rings twice (per ring) and the fax is configured to recognize it but does not pick up. I can manually answer it from the console.

Hi,
it seems like you have lots of services on your line. here are the things that i want you to follow to somehow resolve the issue.
1. Press the setup button on your printer, then use the arrow down button to scroll down and go to ADVANCE FAX SETUP.
2. Press okay on Advance fax setup, then it will give you options.
3. The first option is DISTINCTIVE RINGS, press okay on that.
4. It will give you first option "DISTINCTIVE RING", scroll down and look for "answer on double rings" then press okay. then try letting someone send you a fax.
Note: make sure that your answering machine is using your home telephone line so that it wont affect the faxing functionality.
1. if the issue still not resolve, try to press setup, then go to TOOLS.
2. press okay on TOOLS and it will give you options, scroll down using the arrow down button and look for RUN FAX TEST.
3. Check the result of the test if everything passed!
Let me know if the issue still not resolve so that i can go ahead and give you additional steps.
thank you so much.

Hello There. Most household all in one units cannot operate on the ring characteristcs that you are describing.
They simply operate on the number of rings before automatic pickup to the fax machine. Therefore, you will need to just change the number of rings before the fax machine picks up. In this case however, you will not be able to use voicemail, since one or the other will will pickup.

Page 63 and 64 (in PDF) or page 62 and 63 (hardcopy manual) explain the process.
Ignore the information about setting higher then voicemail. That information is typically only valid if you have the old voicemail devices in your home. Most people now adays get a voicemail service added to your telephone service, in which case you cannot control the voicemail as easily.
So again, in other words you will be sacrificing your voicemail for your fax machine. Only other way around it is to get a dedicated fax line to seperate the two numbers.

pleass make a copy from the printer
either you use a dedicated line for phone and fax or the same line for phone and fax
then perform a power drain on the printer

holding down the button
unplug the power cable from the rear access of the printer
hold down the button for 10 secs
then first replug the power cord
then reboot the printer
press the setup icon(it resembles a wrench) on the printer touch screen

if there is dial tone failure you need to check the phone line
if all says pass
then go to setup once again
then go to advanced fax setup

if it is fast set it to medium
then check the ecm(error correction mode)
set it to off from on

then set it to off
then go to basic fax setup
then check the rings to answer
please make sure that the rings to answer for fax should always be 2 rings more than the telephonic answering machine
run a fax test again
then try sending a fax to the number(1-888-473-2963)
thats the hp[ faxme ] number
you will get a return fax
if the fax test says that the fax hardware failed please contact the hp tech support
