I'm not sure about networking the two OSs but the latest driver can be had here:

I did see some reports of quirky behavior though.

We have an oj8500 (not wireless) printer connected to one computer operating on windows xp. We can to add a computer operating on windows vista to the printer. is there a way to do it that works? if so,...

Yes, if both these computers are on a network (wireless or wired, doesn't matter), the printer can be shared on the XP machine and then found and installed on the Vista machine.
The only disadvantage is that the sharing machine must be on all the time in order to make the printer available to the other computer.
To share a printer, open the Printers and Faxes applet from Start Menu -> Settings, right-click your printer and choose Sharing. The system will guide you.
Afterwards on the Vista computer you must install a new printer and tell it to search for a network printer - it should be found and installed quite easily.

Please come back and rate the solution if helped or post a comment for further assistance.

Brother mfc 8500 printer on xp does not print occasionally.

I try the following-
Unplug your fax machine, wait few seconds, replug.
Open the toner door, take out the unit, put it back in.
Restart the computer.
One of the above should work. It helps me.
Check your printing icon as well.

Sharing a printer between a Vista Home Premium and XP Media Center Computer

Hi cavman6

(01) Is the Vista computer able to access ANY shared resources at all on the XP machine?

(02) Are you running any firewall software (other than the firewall built into the operating system) on either computer?

(03) If you are, please, let us know which firewall software it is and, for now, please, disable it.

(04) Do both these computers have Internet access? (I'm assuming they do but I do need to ask.)

(05) Is the printer currently ONLINE and working properly w/ the XP machine?

IF YOU HAVEN'T DONE SO ALREADY, PLEASE, DO THE FOLLOWING:

(06) Assign *both* computers to the same network WORKGROUP.

(07) Ensure that file and print sharing are enabled on the XP machine. If you'd like, do so on the Vista system, too.
(A) How to on Windows XP
(B) How to on Windows Vista

(08) "Share" the printer on the XP machine (in printer properties).

(09) Can each computer now see itself AND the other computer on the network?

(10) Have you added your user name and password that you're using on the Vista system to the users list on the XP system?

(11) If you haven't done so already, please, do this. The user name should have a password associated w/ it. So, if you aren't using a password on your Vista system profile, assign one then add that user's credentials to the users list on the XP system.

Please, post back here w/ what you've tried and the results, your observations and any other comments or questions.

Thank you
BJ @:)
