Worst case to defrost, clean everything out food wise and unplug and leave doors open until it all melts. It sounds like the coils are dirty so the unit keeps running until it freezes over. Try cleaning all the coils, the compressor, etc, and when you try it make sure that there isn't anything in the way of the airstream

is the evaporator fan working, which normally make the food compartment cool.Are the cooling passages clear, if the fan is not functioning, it will create and ice build up which then needs to be defrosted by shutting it down or with a hair dryer or heat gun.

Are you sure the water (solenoid) valves are actually working? You should hear a distinct 'click' when they're activated. If you remove the outlet tube from the water dispenser valve, does it pass water when activated? Have you checked that the solenoids are actually getting voltage on demand?

Typically the freezer fan motor should be replaced, the issue usually lies with the tachometer within the fan motor, the main control board is not sensing the proper speed of the fan motor and therefore can't operate it correctly. In many cases the main board gets replaced too to ensure the most up to date software, as GE has had NUMEROUS software revisions on those main boards over the last 11 years. Hi Alan, usually if your compressor doesn't kick in straight away when power is supplied but the lights work ok in the fridge then I would have to say that your pressure switch which is usually attached to the compressor motor is not working properly. There is usually a schematic attached to the back of the fridge somewhere which shows how everything is connected but unless you are used to reading electrcal schematics it might as well be in Russian. You will need to call in a refridge technician if I'm right about the problem.
