A few possiblities can be the brake caliper could be sticking. Does it do it during or right after braking? It could be a wheel bearing has gone bad. Does it sound like a turning howel or grind that goes faster as your speed goes faster? It could be worn center velocity (CV) axle. Do you hear a metalic clicking when simply going forward and backwards? This could also indicate worn Universal joints. If the only symptom is "locking up", it could be the rear differential gears have stripped or broken.

I have a feeling that they came with drum brakes on the rear. Most likely the unit has fell apart or it's over adjusting itself when you stop the vehicle after being in reverse. Many of the vehicle manufacturers have those drum brakes adjust when you are backing up and then using the brakes to stop. If the adjustment screw is malfunctioning, then there is a possibility of the brake over adjusting. Also, make sure that the emergency brake cable is not seezed.
Good luck

Hi it sounds as if your brake linings have broken away you will need to remove the drum to see.

SOURCE: removing rear break drum from a 2006 chevy Equinox

You need to de-adjust your rear brakes and/or slacken off the park brake cable to remove the drum as the chances are the drum has a wear lip that the shoes are getting hung up on. ( first make sure there isn't a little retaining screw holding the drum on !..visible with the wheel removed)

SOURCE: 2007 chevy equinox driver side window quit working

I had same issue, you must remove driver door panel and you will notice some wires have broken after constant open/closing of door. Reconnect wires and you are good to go !

Is there a way to use a key to open the rear hatch door, car battery dead 2009 equinox

Yes, you should be able to use the key to unlock the rear hatch of your 2009 Equinox even if the car battery is dead. The lock cylinder for the rear hatch is likely located on the outside of the hatch itself, or it may be located on the door handle. To unlock the hatch with the key, insert the key into the lock cylinder and turn it clockwise. If the key won't turn or the hatch won't open, you may need to wiggle the key or apply more pressure to unlock the hatch. If the key won't go into the lock cylinder at all, it is possible that the lock is frozen or damaged and will need to be repaired or replaced. You may also be able to use the manual release for the rear hatch, which is usually located inside the vehicle, near the driver's side door or on the underside of the dashboard.

2010 chevy Equinox LT Left rear wheel is locked. Could the parking brake be stuck on?

It could be a parking brake issue but it could also be a failed wheel bearing. If you get that wheel off the ground, does it flop around? If so, you need at least a bearing. It may have damaged the knuckle as well. It should have made a distinct roaring or humming sound as it was failing.

The "star" brake adjuster on a chevy equinox is

There is a ratchet attached to the rear brake shoe to advance the star wheel. Use a screwdriver or thin piece of metal and push it out of the way and the star wheel can be turned backwards. To do this you will have to lift up on the tool you are using to turn the wheel. Hope this helps.
