Hi,

You need to reset the default language to English and this can be awkward because the menus are now in a foreign language and it is difficult to see where to go in the menu system.

Please see this FixYa Tip which has pictures to guide you through the process and shows the menus that you need to reset the language.

I have the same question. Are there Tom Tom maps for Cyprus?

First thing first you can try and see if the volume is not on mute.
You can change the volume in 3 ways.

Tap the bottom left hand area of the Driving View. The last spoken instructions is repeated and the volume level is shown.
Move the volume slider to adjust the volume.
In the main menu, Tap change preferences, then volume preferences.
Tap test to check your changes.

To change the voice being used by your Tomtom XL, tap Voice preferences in the Preferences menu, then tap Change Voice. Select a voice from the list and save it.

You can also update the GPS by downloading voice updation.

Try to use the Voice Profile named "SAMANTHA" it really helps.

look for a small hole on the outside case near the sd card reader. might need a paperclip or pin to poke the microswitch inside the hole. simply clicking the switch doesn't work, try holding it for 5 seconds then try to power up. Common problem with GPS devices, (my mio included) is after being plugged in for a long time, the battery life becomes nil and it relies upon the charger. Check tom to xl for further problem solving. google search TOM TOM XL won't power up.

To change the language to English on this unit do the following

1) First make sure the unit is fully charged as you will need to proceed with a reset of the unit.

2) Once the unit is fully charged - press and hold the on/off button for at least 15 seconds until you see it perform a restart.

3) Once you are sure it has restarted turn the unit on normally and you will see a screen filled with text. This will probably not be in English so tap the little tab in the right hand lower corner of the screen to proceed.

4) Now tap anywhere near the centre of the screen which brings you to a main menu.

5) You will see 6 icons on this screen. Tap the one right in the centre of the bottom row.

6) Now Tap on the right arrow icon (which is on the righthand bottom of the screen) until you see a screen appear with an icon with three flags. The three flags icon will be in the top left hand side of the screen.

7) Tap the three flags icon - you will see English appear in the options list - tap this and chose Yes to confirm.

If you follow this procedure exactly the unit will display English language screens from here on in.

Do this whilst it is disconnect from a PC

Whilst it shows a map display touch the screen once.


Select the icon that looks like a spanner / wrench

Use the right arrow on the display until you see a bunch of flags. (if you shoot past it just keep going until it comes around again)

Touch that and select the correct the correct flag / language

Try sticking a long thin Preferably plastic) spike into the reset hole (small hole in the base). Then press the start button again for some 10 seconds.
This may help.
If it is working, there should be the TomTom cold start screen and drum sound as it boots up from scratch. Allow it several seconds to boot. Repeat if necessary. If this fails, contact TomTOm support with all details.

Have you selected an electronic voice? If you have a "standard" voice or have used a "celebrity" download voice, it won't give computed responses for street names.
Go to voices, change voice and try a digital/electronic voice. If not installed, use TomTom home to download an electronic voice.

Newer maps are not readable by older device software. Please upgrade your TomTom application to the latest version.

1. Make sure that you have the latest version of TomTom HOME installed.
   • If TomTom HOME is already installed click on Help > Check for TomTom HOME Update.
   • If you do not have TomTom HOME installed, you can download the program fromwww.tomtom.com/home.
2. Connect your device to your computer.
3. Open TomTom HOME.
4. If updates are not offered automatically, click on Update my device.
5. Download all available updates, restart your device and then reconnect your device to the computer.
6. When the updates have finished installing use Device > Disconnect Device.
7. Repeat steps 4 through 6 until the update window shows 'No Items Available'.

Now that you are up to date with your application, check to see if the device still displays the NoMaps Found error under normal operation.

TomTom navigation refers to the TomTom GPS (Global Positioning System), which is a portable car device that guides drivers along a predetermined route through a map display and voice instruction. It determines its location with the help of GPS satellites, so it must be installed where it has a line-of-sight to the sky, such as a windshield. These procedures apply to all TomToms in general and specifically to the TomTom One.

Mount
1. Select an area on the driver's side below your driving sightline. When installed, the GPS must not block your view of the road.
2. Wipe the area clean and if needed, wait for it to dry.
3. Remove the mounting cup film. To ensure that it sticks securely to the glass, moisten the bottom.
4. Press the cup against the windshield. If it has an EasyPort dial, rotate it clockwise until locked.
5. Attach the charging cord to your TomTom and then plug it into the power outlet of your car.

Setup
1. Press the device switch for up to 20 seconds until a welcome is displayed. If the device stays off, recharge the unit by driving your car for a few minutes. Then turn it on again.
2. Setup questions appear asking about preferences such as time and volume. To answer them, tap the screen controls. After setting up, you can still change your preferences by touching the "Change Preferences" icon on the "Main" menu.
3. Drive your car to an open area without tall buildings or trees so your device can find its location. Put your TomTom anywhere on your console so it has an unobstructed path to the sky. When it is finished, the GPS shows the driving view at your current location.
4. You can now use the unit by touching the "Navigate To" button and entering a destination.
5. Slide the TomTom onto the mount holder until it clicks. Adjust the device by twisting it slightly until you can view the screen clearly. Start your drive as the GPS gives directions.

TIPS:
In some states such as California, it is illegal to attach anything to your windshield. In that case, you need to attach your mount to a dashboard mount such as the Bean Bag Dashboard Mount, which is also sold by TomTom. To avoid accident-causing distractions, never program your TomTom while driving. Instead, program the GPS before driving or after pulling over to a shoulder or parking lot.

The simplest way is to have your dad insert a paper clip tip into the "Reset" hole in the gps case. This will set the unit back to factory defaults and it will prompt on startup to select a language.

make soft reset make sure batt is full hold on/off button for more then 15 seconds your tomtom will start again.

you can make memspace by throwing away any languages you dont need. make backup before erase. use latest tomtom software. good luck.

go to tomtom.com, go to support, search for reset, select your device do as told. includes fotos of resetbutton and good discription. first make sure battery is full. goodluck.

Tap this button to change the language used for all the buttons and messages you see on your ONE/XL.
You can choose from a wide range of languages. When you change the language, you are also given the opportunity to change the voice.

Hi There!

You Can charge your Tomtom when you drive, or you can charge it with a USB port on your computer.
I don't think they come with a mains charger anymore?

You solved the problem for me. I switched to a "computer voice" and the Tom Tom began calling out the street names. As many times as I read the 340S manual I never saw the requirement to use only a computer voice to speak the street names. Your help is greatly appreciated. Thanks again.
