Look for a small hole on the outside case near the sd card reader. might need a paperclip or pin to poke the microswitch inside the hole. simply clicking the switch doesn't work, try holding it for 5 seconds then try to power up. Common problem with GPS devices, (my mio included) is after being plugged in for a long time, the battery life becomes nil and it relies upon the charger. Check tom to xl for further problem solving. google search TOM TOM XL won't power up.

The green power light on my tomtom XL is on and is fully charged however the screen wont turn on and remains black, it also makes no noise.

First you need to check if the battery is okay, try it on another tom tom gps receiver, if it is working and the screen wont turn on, then it means there is a hardware problem, probably the flexi ribbon that is connected to the screen is either loose or bad, this will require you to disassemble the tom tom and check for the flexi ribbon that connects to the screen, then you resit it or change the ribbon, that should do the job.
You can also try to reset the tom tom first before disassembling it. By pressing and holding the power on/off button for about 15 seconds, if that does not do the job, then you can go ahead and disassemble the tom tom.
Hope this solution helped

Poor gps reception on tom tom one

my tom tom one third edition connects in less than 40 seconds from ca cold start.
first reset everything then connect it to your computer and upload all the needed updates to it( especially the QUICKGPSFIX feature that speeds up the time it takes to connect to satellites.
after that. go outside and wait for the signal to be acquired ( less than 2 minutes)

Tomtom one XL

You dont specify "all the usual" things you have tried. Have you tried taking out the simcard if you have one and then pressing the reset button? Replace the sim and fire up the tom tom. Works for me.

Tom tom go910 navi

the reset button is onthe back and you usually need a pen or pin to press it in. other than that confirm it is fully charged if it still isn't working then return it as faulty to the place you purchased it
