You can definately get sound without them but you must have an internal speaker inside the computer. an alternative option would be to plug headphones into the line out port in the back of the computer.
Now you will need to check inside the computer for the internal speaker. It will be a little black round plastic bit with two wires it should be plugged in to the motherboard at the bottom right hand corner. This is the Front Panel Instrumentation and Illumination Area or just F_PANEL for short on most motherboards. If there is one plugged in, then you need to go to the audio properties and select internal audio.
Hope this helps.

Hi! I have a problem with desktop speakers, buzzing sound without reproduction from sound card...other speakers work properly, so obviosly it is a problem with the speakers..the power suply is ok, diode is...

Are this powered speakers connect to the same mains power socket as the computer.
If not you may be getting an earth loop which causes a humming sound.
Connect these speakers to the same power outlet, if you have not sufficient outlets use a power board.

Speakers are not working in dell inspiron 6000

Please connect an external speaker or headphones and check if you get sound. If sound works then the issue is with the onboard speakers in the laptop.

If sound does not work with the external speakers or headphones then the issue could be with the sound card driver or settings.

No sound

Hello
If picture is OK and there is no sound output from your tv, means either its speaker or the Sound output Ic is not working. The case of speaker fault can be easly detected without opening the TV. You just place your ear very near to the speaker side and switch on the TV by AC mains [not with remote control]. You may hear a "thumb" SOUND OR A "HUM" sound from it. If any one is there the internal speaker is working fine. The fault lies in audio output Ic stage. If there is no sound said above, speaker can be suspected. Befor confirming that the speaker is faulty, if your TV has an earphone or headphone jack in front, insert the earphone or headphone socket into it, and check whether there is any sound heard from it. If there is sound from headphone, means that the headphone socket is faulty, it does not bypass the sound to the speaker. When head phone is connected, the connection to the speaker will automatically cut of. When it is pulled out from the socket, the speaker connection will resume. If the changeover switch inside the earphone socket also show this kind of trouble. If the speaker inside is found faulty, unscrew it out of place after opening the TV, go for a same type and number, impedence and shape.
If there comes the above said "HUM" sound from the speaker, surely the Sound Output Ic is faulty. Replacing it will solve the probelm. Before replacing it, check it soldering points for any loose contact. It is best to resolder all suspected point is sound section before replacing the ic.
Note: In modern TVs there will be any trace of sound, without a video signal. Without video, sound is muted. ok.

Hook up extra speakers

Most of these portable PA systems do NOT have amplifiers capable of driving extra speakers SAFELY without risk to the amp.

I would NOT attempt to drive more speakers without using another amp to drive those speakers.

Standard speakers to the computer , low volume

You are getting low volume because there is no amplifier in those speakers. Computer speaker sets are powered -- there is an amp in one of them them which drives both speakers -- a computer audio output without an amplifier will only satisfactorily drive headphones.

No sound comes from speakers

there is usually a cd with drivers for the sound card. otherwise, you'll need to have the drivers downloaded from the manufacturer's website(which I don't know, without a name for your computer).

also, check your control panel settings.

No sound

What exactly is evrything?

Reinstalled sound drivers?
Checked your speaker cord to make sure it comes into the green hole on the back?
made sure your speaker wires are not broken?
Volum on the speakers?
Control pannel> Sound> Speaker Icon: Are the controls HIGHLIGHTED? If not sound driver is not loaded.
Check Volum MUTE. SOme programs MUTE your volume without a warning.
