I have a 50 inch panasonic 720 plasma tv and while watching it last night a large black box with white writing came on in the top right corner of the screen with mute in it and the sound went off. I havent been able to get the sound to come back on. Normally when the mute button on the remote is pressed a small mute box comes on the screen in the lower left corner.

The best way is to contact your service provider and ask them to trouble shoot guide you, there should be a way to reset or diagnose the receiver or if you prefer go back to the place you bought it and ask for a replacement, You should still have the manufacturer's warranty, check that as well.
It's hard to say without seeing a picture. Panasonic has a site with pictures of various Plasma symptoms and the board that will cause that problem. Go to:
