If the typewriter has a Dead Key Disconnect make sure it is set for normal typing.

More likely is that the machine is not restoring the escapement disconnect after a correction key operation. When you press the correction button the machine does a single backspace, then sets the correction tape to operate and also disables the escapement (spacing) for a single operation to enable you to type the correct character over the erased one. If the machine becomes worn or gummy, the cancel of the disabled spacing will not function and the carrier will remain in one spot, but carrier-return and tab will work fine. This would be my pick for the fault. A typed character or space-bar operation would normally restore normal escapement (spacing). Try yahoo groups - golfballtypewritershop for more help and manuals
