I have an IBM Selectric 111 typewriter and the carriage will move when I hit the exp button or tab but will not move with the space bar. If I strike a key the carriage stays in place. I have looked for typewriter repair, however, no luck. I will appreciate any info you can send my way. Thanks, Joan

If the typewriter has a Dead Key Disconnect make sure it is set for normal typing.

You can find a manual for the typewriter at the bottom of this page:

More likely is that the machine is not restoring the escapement disconnect after a correction key operation. When you press the correction button the machine does a single backspace, then sets the correction tape to operate and also disables the escapement (spacing) for a single operation to enable you to type the correct character over the erased one. If the machine becomes worn or gummy, the cancel of the disabled spacing will not function and the carrier will remain in one spot, but carrier-return and tab will work fine. This would be my pick for the fault. A typed character or space-bar operation would normally restore normal escapement (spacing). Try yahoo groups - golfballtypewritershop for more help and manuals

Carriage does not advance when pressing the space bar or pressing a key. Does advance when depressing tab.

If you press a key does it type or try to correct? The escapement mechanism that allows it to move from space to space may be sticking and causing your problem. That mechanism just may need a flushing and lubrication. You will see a shaft that runs through the carriage. Try to turn it top to rear until it stops. if you hear a click then it has been turned the right amount. If it doesn't turn, then it is as far as it goes. Try hitting the spacebar and see if the carriage moves. If it moves, hit any key and see if it moves. if it moves, hit another key. If it doesn't move then your escapement mechanism needs to either be flushed and lubed or adjusted.

My IBM selectric II typewriter carriage stuck in right margin

Sounds like the return lever arm is not putting enough pressure on the return clutch, or the clutch is slipping. The exp key uses the same clutch but the pressure comes from your finger. Theres no way you can fix this yourself. Get an IBM mechanic.

I have a IBM Correcting Selectric II and I'm having trouble clearing out the margins. Can you help?

space to the right side of the machine, hold down the tab clear key and hit return.

If the carriage stops partway back, one of the tab stops has rotated too far on the tab bar.

remove the platen and paper pan, go to the stuck stop, rotate it to the rear of the machine to line up with the other tabs

IBM Selectric Typing carriage doesn't stop moving. Stuck key?

It sounds like a possible tab knockoff problem. This could be a small spring loose or broken in the escapement portion of the machine or the final knockoff in the tab unit out of alignment. You can try setting a tab before the end of the carriage by holding the carrier in place and using your other hand to press Tab Set, but the alignment may be just far enough off to keep you from actually setting the tab. One other thing that sometimes will cause the problem is the pitch setting lever is between the two pitches. Make sure your pitch setting lever is seated in its home position.

My IBM Selectric carriage doesn't move when I type. The buttons all work fine but it doesn't move at all. Any suggestions?

The black plastic shields under the carriage usually get warped and cause problems. Sometimes the tab pulley located on the right side outside the frame will break and the cords will come off the pulley. You will a repair tech to install this. Cost about $ 50.00 in Clearwater Florida.

IBM Selectric II-return goes past the margin stop

The margin release mech. is probably gummy and allowing returns to go past the margin. If thi is a dual pitch machine see if the pitch selector lever will move easily. If not use some WD40 on the margin rack.

IBM Correcting selctric II keys are jammed

It sounds like the cycle shaft is not fully in home
position. With the machine OFF, try to turn the print shaft (the steel shaft with the single groove that goes through the carriage) top towards the back of the machine. Then turn the machine on. Try the space bar first. If it works, your machine probably needs the cycle clutch spring adjusted or replaced.

Carriage return problem

If it returns with the express key the latching mech. on the rt. side is probably gummy. Take off the case, get some WD40 and spray the mechinism that latches the ret on the rt. side below the platen.
