LCD display screens on notebook PCs are made of two thin layers of glass with dark liquid crystal material in between. The glass is covered on the outside by layer of plastic. Cracks in the glass cannot be felt due to the plastic covering which rarely breaks or is fractured.

It is important to understand that lines on the LCD can also be caused by video issues. These can normally be resolved by downloading a new driver or could have been caused by the media you are using.
If in fact your LCD display is "black" the quickest fix is to connect it to a external monitor. If one is not available and depending on the type of damage your have you can try to re-install the graphics card software & driver or send the notebook in for repair. Call HP to determine if the unit is still in-warranty, and they will be replacing it. Otherwise, you may have to upgrade it through their Out-of-Warrranty programs.
