Gateway NV5378u lap top, brand new battery installed and status says 100% charged. When I unplug the computer it shuts off as if there is no battery. Could the new battery be defective?

There are a few things to check. The LED lights can tell you a lot. This will tell you more about the battery:
  1. On the taskbar, double-click the power cord icon or battery icon to open the Power Meter dialog box. Note: If the power cord icon or battery icon does not appear on the taskbar, click the show hidden icons button.
  2. Press Fn+STATUS to view the power status box, which opens in the upper-left corner of the screen. The power status box shows the current power source, the battery charge level, and the power management mode.
  3. Look at the battery charge indicator (if applicable).
    • LED green - Battery is fully charged.
    • LED orange - Battery is charging.
    • LED blinking red - Battery charge is very low.
    • LED solid red - Battery is malfunctioning. Note: This LED only lights up when the notebook is connected to AC power.
  4. Press the battery meter button on the battery. The battery meter lights indicate the percentage of battery charge remaining.
  5. Wait for a Low Battery warning message to appear.
If your battery charge indicator displays what looks like an inaccurate charge, you may need to recalibrate the battery.

To recalibrate the battery as mentioned, try this:
  1. Connect the AC adapter and then turn on the notebook.
  2. As soon as it starts and you see a startup screen, press the F2 key.
  3. In the BIOS Setup utility, use the TAB key to select the Advanced menu.
  4. On the Advanced menu, select Battery Auto Learning, and then press the SPACEBAR to select Enabled.
  5. Use the RIGHT ARROW key to select the Exit menu. On the Exit menu select Exit Saving Changes, and then press ENTER.
  6. At the Setup Confirmation prompt, select Yes, and then press ENTER.
  7. The battery recalibration process begins and a screen opens showing you the progress.
  8. When the recalibration has finished, and the message "Press [Esc] key to exit" appears, press Esc. The battery charge indicator now displays an accurate battery charge.

Hope this helps!!

Can't get past lock code

Laptop computers have the advantage being portable and self-contained, but among their drawbacks is a keyboard without a separate number keypad. While for most applications number keypads are unnecessary, they can be useful for data entry. Laptops sometimes provide a number keypad by giving certain keys double duty, allowing them to enter numbers rather than letters when a "Number Lock" setting is turned on. Number Lock, however, can get turned on accidentally, or enabled by an operating system by default, which can really mess up your typing. If typing "M" ends up displaying a "0" on your screen, Number Lock is probably the problem.

Try to locate the function key. On a T-series ThinkPad, it's in the lower left hand corner. It should be labeled "Fn," and the lettering may be blue, green or red instead of white. If your laptop lacks a "Fn" key, use the "Shift" key for Step 3 below instead. Locate the key labeled with "NmLk". On a T-series ThinkPad it shares a key with "ScrLk" which sits on the very top row between the "PrtSc" and "Pause" keys. On other IBM laptops, the "NmLk" key might share a key with "Delete." While holding down the "Fn" key or the "Shift" key, depending on your model, press the "NmLk" key. This should turn off Number Lock and restore your keyboard to its usual state. Number Lock on an IBM laptop is a "toggle" setting. You can turn Number Lock on by following the same steps.

My mouse touchpad is locked. Keeps showing a diagram on screen with a red line thru the touchpad??

There may be a button towards the top of the keyboard (one of the ones with LEDs next to them) that turns the touch pad on and off. Otherwise, there is usually a keyboard combination (the Fn key in the lower left + one of the F1-12 keys) that can toggle it on and off as well. Otherwise, in the lower right hand corner, if you plug in a mouse, you should be able to right click the touchpad icon and re-enable it.

Then shut Windows down normally.

Go through steps 1 through 5 above, but this time choose Enabled.
You need to turn Boot Booster back on once you've restored Windows, or your computer will be like molasses in the winter in booting up.

Asus moved the User Manual for the Eee PC 1005HA to their FTP site.

ftp://ftp.asus.com.tw/pub/ASUS/EeePC/1005HAB/

In the list click right on >
E4776_Eee_PC_1005HAB_XP_manual.zip

This is a Zip file.
After you unzip it you will have a PDF file.

After you click on the above file name a small window will come up.
Click on Save File.

Observe, and write down, what you see in the top of the next small window that comes up.
In the top of that window is where this file will download to.
It may have Desktop, or My Documents, or Downloads in the wording.

If it has Desktop in the wording, the file will go to your desktop screen.

If it has My Documents in the wording, the file will go to your My Documents folder.
{Start > My Documents}

If it has Downloads in the wording, the file will go to your Downloads folder.
(Start > My Documents > Double-click on Downloads}

When you see the file name double-click right on it.

Now click on Unzip in the list.
In the next window go to the upper left, and click on > Extract All Files.
Now click on Next, Next, and Finish at the bottom of the window.

In the last window that comes up, the file name will be next to a red PDF icon.
Double-click on it.
There is your User Manual.
