There is no pilot light. it uses a glowbar style igniter.

The problem is usually the igniter not reaching the correct amp draw .When the igniter does not reach the correct amp draw it may allow the gas valve to partially open or not open at all. The igniters are inexpensive and easy to replace. This video will walk you thru the correct procedure for testing an oven igniter. It may be a different model but the testing will be the same. You can also enter your model # for diagrams and illustrations of your specific model. Not all models are available. All parts come with installation instructions.

When i turn on oven all i smell is gas i cleaned with a wire brush still nothing. also is the pilot light always have to be on and can you see it when oven is off

Most gas ovens that aren't electronic ignition usually have a pilot light.
Usually one in the oven area and one for each burner. (Sometimes shared between two burners.)
These pilot lights must lit at all times...otherwise it won't light up and you'll smell gas.
Usually the pilot light is in the very back of the oven and can be seen with the broiler drawer opened.

There is a small set screw located at the pilot light assembly in the oven and also at every burner.
This allows you to adjust pilot light up or down, thereby letting you set pilot light flame to a level that doesn't get blown out by a draft...or you can turn it off completely.

If you use that set screw to turn off the pilot light gas, you'd need to strike a match to light the oven or burners everytime you needed them.

The oven pilot does not light. The broiler will not work. The only thing that does is the light. GE XL44 range. The burners light and the pilots stay lit.

If you have standing pilots, make sure the pilot for the oven/broiler is lit as well.  When you turn the thermostat up to call for heat, you should see the pilot get larger. That larger pilot flame heats a hydraulic sensor and opens the main burner valve.

Where is the pilotlight on a ge xl44 gas stove I belive it is in the door under the oven well I turned the gas on and stuck a flame down there and nothen took off is there a certian place to put the flame....

In general lets be clear. The OVEN pilot is located under the oven door at the top of the Broiler. It is a small piece of metal just before the GAS safety Valve which acts on temperature so gas won't flow unless Pilot is lit,That's the OVEN PILOT.The stove's RANGE is the top burners where you heat Pots and Pans.It has either 2 Pilot lights that connect the burners to the Flame they are under the Range Top.Newer Models use electronic ignitions no flame. Please note if you had your stove/oven disconected or Gas off when you turn it back on there will be air in the line that needs to escape before you light. This is why in NYC when Utility Co.works on steet main the MUST re-light your appliances.Be Careful with Gas.Good Luck.

    Gas oven dosnt work

the pilot light is there for 2 purposes. number 1 to light the burner and number 2 to heat up the thermocouple, thermocouple is a wire that the flame from pilot suppose to surround by fire. if the pilot is to low it will not reach the thermocouple. you can take the gas line that supplies gas to the pilot and clean it with a safety pin or a small needle. you can test the thermocouple by heating it up with a blow torch on low heat, get it red hot and then turned on the oven. if the oven works clean the pilot, if the oven do not work, replace the thermocouple if separate from safety valve. if thermocouple is part of it replace the safety valve.

    Stove top pilot light

I have a GE Gas Stove XL44 the stove top buners don't light by themselves without manual lighting. When I turn on the buner knob the buner doesn't click. Also I used my self- cleaning oven for the first time and stopped it before the time was up after that is when the stove top buners wouldn't light by theirselves.

    GE XL44 Range

The pilot light is lit to light the main burner. First off, is your pilot light lit or is the igniter lit. There are two thermal sensor in the oven. One is above your pilot light and will not let the pilot light stay lit unless there is a flame. Secondly, you have a thermal sensor in your oven wired all the way to the switch to turn the oven on. If it thinks that it is at temp, then it will never turn on. This sensor may become bad or the case of my oven break. But if these are good, you many have a clogged burning unit underneath. Cleaning according to the owners manual may correct that. Check your owners manual to see what is user serviceable. Gas is nothing to play with.
