You may have a dirty video head, try a wet or dry cleaning tape (I recommend the dry tape) the other option is to use a brand new store bought tape T120, set vcr to sp "2hrs" and let it play the full time.

My JVC DR-MV150B plays prerecorded VHS tapes fine.

Try opening the front hatch of the tape by pressing the small, square button on the right or left (short) side of the tape. Check the black tape inside for any marks, dirt, scratches, tears, etc. If the tape is fine then your unit needs to be cleaned with a tape cleaner available at any electronics specialty or retail store. Good luck to you!

Vhs tapes recorded to DVD+R's

try forwarding the tape to the end and then rewind to the start again, this can help to seat the tape correctly on the spindle . the audio track part of the tape is in a specific region on the tape so misalignment may be the issue with those cassettes.

also try to press the tracking up and down when playing the video

Cannot play VHS

Combo DVD/VCR players don't output the VHS with Component Video. Most of the time, it won't output over the S-Video either. The high end outputs are ONLY for DVD output. You must run a yellow wire, or use coax cable to get the video. Same goes for the optical digital sound out. It's only for DVD use.

Noise while playing VHS

It sounds like the tape is cocked slightly. some VHS tapes did make noise. I'd take it to the store and show them the noise.
