Question about Toymax Magnavox 37MF231D 37 in. LCD TV

2 Answers

Have a Magnavox 37mf321d LCD TV, one day, went to turn it on, and the green power light came on, along with the screen (which just flashed), and then went off. Waited a few seconds and tried again, the same thing happened again, only this time the green light and screen flashed about 15 times, and then stopped. Every time I turn it on the same things happens, if it has been sitting a more than 10 mins or so, one flash then off. If I try it again, it flashes between 10-25 times, the number is always random. I have tried resetting the TV, changing power cords, plugging directly into the wall to rule out a bad surge protector, and I have taken the back off and looked for popped capacitors. I tested the fuse on the power supply board, it is good.

Although a capacitor may look good, it may be weak or bad. Here is what you will have to do. Replace capacitor (location) 2074 which is a 25 volt 2200Mf at 105 degrees. Replace capacitor (location) 2081 which is a 35 volt 1200 Mf at 105 degrees. And you should change capacitor 2066 which is a 16 volt 10Mf at 105 degrees. Please be careful with the last cap mentioned. You can easily tear the PCB trace if you are not extremely careful. This should bring your TV back to life. Thanks for asking and show a few hands of support!

Do you know if it is required to use the same brand for the capacitors or is it ok to use any capacitor with the same rating and voltage? My tv has CapXon capacitors in it and I couldtnt find the exact brand on google. they have nichicon capacitors on amazon and im curious to know if those will work.

You can use any brand. Be sure you use a high temperature capacitor. Should be rated at 105 degrees. And of course the same exact Mfs. The voltage may be the same or higher, but not less. Thanks for asking.

Thanks a ton!! I'm hoping to get my tv back up and running here in less than a week!

hello this question is for maatmartin7 you gave advice on replacing capacitors... 2200Mf or 2200uf whats difference between Mf and uf caps i did the cap change out from a different advisor but with uf caps is this a problem... i had the green light flashing symptom for a long time i just kept pushing tv to turn on..now i just get a backlight of the screen for a few seconds then nothing else no indicator light stays on just blank. is there a way to test a power supply board befor putting the tv back together? thanks for any response

The uf is the symbol for microfarads. Yes you did fine by using them. Remember you should replace two caps. The 35 volt 1200Mf and the 25 volt 2200mf. Be sure you are using the 105 degree temperature caps and you have the correct polarity. And the las tcap use caution upon removal and that one is the 16 volt 10 mf. Be sure you inspect any and all grounds. You may have to double check your work. If you have an ESR meter you may find another weak capacitor. But you will have to search. The ESR meter is your capacitor tester. Thanks for asking!

I just fixed a similar problem on mine and it was on the main board but mine wasn't responding to pushing the power button. I made a video on what part I found bad and how to replace it. I also added a link below for what part I ordered. L5973D STMicroelectronics Mouser

37mf321d won't turn on- no busted capacitors

Hey Superdave,
Does the whole tv turns off when the picture turns off ??? What you're describing sound like a defective CCFL backlight. This would make since why someone threw it out because the repair estimates of replacing the bulbs would knock your socks off. Most will suggest ordering a new LCD panel assembly which would cost way more than what the set is worth. On some sets, when a CCFL is out, the screen will come on for a few seconds then go out. On other sets, after so many "lamp failures" logged in memory, the set will not power up at all and just flash trouble codes through the power indicator.

My magnavox 37MF321D/37 will not turn on. It

I had the same problem with the blinking green light. These are the parts one the power supply I replace to repair it. note: If the power supply is repaired you will get a solid green light and the backlight will light up almost immediately.

Sounds like you need to repair the power supply, don't fret, it can be really easy.  Here is a pair of youtube videos I made after following some advice on this website from other posters:

Not powering up right away

This is a big problem with these tv's. Magnavox built them with undersized capacitors, and they blow. You have to open the back, remove the power supply and replace the capacitors numbered 2074 and 2081. This sounds like a real tech job, but read my other solutions, and you will see it is not so hard. Good luck.

My magnavox 37mf321d 37 LCD tv

This is a bad power supply and an easy fix. Their are several electrolytic capacitors on the power supply. If one is bad it will have a bulge on the top. Mine had a bad 2200uF and a bad 1200uF capacitor. About $7 worth of parts at Radio Shack. Radio Shack had the 2200uF but it was axial leads instead of radial. (leads come out of each end instead of one end) but It will still fit. They only had a 1000uf capacitor so I combined that with a 220uF capacitor and wired them in parallel. Make sure you put them in with the correct polarity.
