How to Reset Windows Password With an Standard User Account?

When you forgot Windows password, did you feel confused that why you cannot reset the forgotten Windows password via standard user or guest account? The answer is very simple as the standard user and guest accounts do not have rights to reset the password of another accounts. Within the three types of Windows user accounts, only the administrator account allows you to change another accounts' password. So if you want to reset Windows password of another accounts, you need to change your account type to administrator firstly. Moreover, if you need to give a user more access to perform tasks like installing software or other system changes, you also need to change your account type.

Steps to Change Windows User Account Type

1. Log on your Windows machine with an administrator account.

2. Click "Start" - "Control Panel" - "User Accounts and Family Safety" - "User Accounts".

3. Click "Manage another account".

4. Click on the user account that you would like to change its type.

5. On the following window, click "Change the account type" from on the left pane.

6. Select Administrator and click "Change Account" Type to finish your operation.

Since the standard user account turn to an administrator one, you can reset Windows password of another accounts or do other operations without limitation through control panel.

You can change standard user to administrator only when you can log on your computer with an available administrator account. If you forgot Windows password of all administrator accounts, you'll need to reset Windows administrator password even you can access your computer with a standard user or guest account.

Software Windows Login Recovery allows you to create a password reset disk with blank CD/DVD or USB flash drive. With the disk you can reset Windows password to be empty in few minutes. With it, you'll never be worried when you forgot Windows password. All you need to do is just three steps.

1. Download and install Windows Login Recovery.

2. Burn a password reset disk with a blank CD/DVD or USB flash drive.

3. Reset Windows password to be empty.

Now you can log on to your computer without passwords. By the way, you can reset any account's password with this software.

Something about Windows User Accounts

Administrator: A administrator account is intended for someone who can make system wide changes to the computer, install software, and access all non-private files on the computer. Only with administrator rights you can full access to other user accounts on the computer, change other their names, passwords, and types.

Standard user: The standard user account can help protect your computer by preventing users from making changes that affect everyone who uses the computer. When you log on to Windows with a standard user account, you can do anything that you can do with an administrator account. But if you want to install software or hardware, reset Windows password of another accounts, etc. the computer might ask you to provide a password of an administrator account.

Guest: A Guest account allows people to use your computer without having rights to access to any of your personal files. This can be useful if you want to quickly allow someone to use your computer. A person that log on computer with guest account cannot install software or hardware, change system settings, or create a password.

Forgot Windows Password - How to Reset the Password without Admin Rights?

Problem: "Forgot Windows password? How I can reset it without admin rights? On my Windows 7 machine, I created 2 accounts. One is an account with admin rights, and the other one is a limited account (standard user account). Now Windows is not recognizing my password for the administrator account. Can I reset the administrator password via the standard user account? Or is there any other way to reset the forgotten administrator account password? Please note I never created a password reset disk for the administrator account."

Solution: As for the above question, the answer is no as users cannot reset another account password via a standard user account. In my opinion, the most effective and simple approach case is to use a powerful Windows password recovery tool like Windows Login Recovery. With this password recovery tool at hand, you easily reset administrator, standard user and guest passwords by yourself if you forgot Windows password. Besides, it is very safe; no data will be lost after Windows password reset.

How to reset forgotten Windows password?

If you decide to use Windows Login Recovery when you forgot Windows password, you need to find an accessible computer, download and install the program in it. Once it is set up, run it and burn a password reset disk with a blank CD/DVD. Then you follow the instructions below to reset forgotten Windows password with the burned CD/DVD.

Step 1. Insert the burned CD/DVD in your locked computer.

Step 2. Press F2, Delete or F10 to enter BIOS Setup when the computer is booting.

Step 3. Set CD-ROM as the first boot device in BIOS.

Note: You could click here to view how to set the first boot device in BIOS. The computer will restart automatically after saving your BIOS settings. And you'll be able to reset forgotten Windows password under DOS.

Step 4. Enter the NO. of your Windows installation path to display all its account user names.

Step 5. Enter the NO. of a specified User Name to remove its account password, then enter y to confirm and continue your operation.

Step 6. Enter n to finish your operation when the selected windows account password is removed.

Note: If you want to remove another Windows account password, please enter y. And you'll repeat the previous steps to reset another account password.

Step 7. Remove the burned CD/DVD and press any key to restart your computer when you enter n to finish your operation.

Now the operation is finished. Windows will not ask you to enter a password when you log on to your computer. Don't you think it is easy? Never feel frustrated when you forgot Windows password with this method.

Why cannot use standard user account?

Are you confused that why you cannot reset the administrator password by using the standard user account? Well, you need to learn what a standard user account is.

According to Microsoft, a standard user account is to let a person use most of the capabilities of the computer, but permission from an administrator is required if you want to make changes that affect other users or the security of the computer.

When you use a standard account, you can use most programs that are installed on the computer, but you can't install or uninstall software and hardware, delete files that are required for the computer to work, or change settings on the computer that affect other users. If you're using a standard account, some programs might require you to provide an administrator password before you can perform certain tasks. So if you forgot Windows password, you could not reset the password by using a standard user account.

Administrators password

if you have another user account with administrator access you can either remove the password i the user account field or you can try accessing the files of that particular user account and transfer it and just erase the user account and create a new one. vista does not have any backdoor to access using the disk unlike xp

Forgot password and can't install anything on my computer

If this is Windows XP. Go into safe mode by re-starting the computer and pressing F8 repeatedly as the computer starts up. You will be given a choice on which "mode" you'd like to start Window in. Choose Safe mode. Then (in safe mode) click Start and then click Run. In the open box type "control userpasswords2" (without the quotes). You will now have access to all the user accounts, including the administrator's account and will be able to reset the password. Just click the administrators user account, and then click Reset Password.
