Philips HDRW720 HDD Formatting CD

Hello Steve, I was wondering if you ever managed to track down that formatting CD? My hard drive has died and after opening it up I see that it is just a standard Maxtor 120GB ATA drive but I suspected that it needs special proprietary Philips formatting. I contacted Philips technical support but they were not able to tell me anything and their authorized service centers want a fortune just to troubleshoot it, never mind repair it. I managed to find a copy of the service manual on the internet but have been unsuccessful in finding this formatting CD. Then I noticed your post and thought perhaps you had found it?

Any help you can offer me would be appreciated,
thanks,
-jeff

Hi Steve, thank you for the reply. I was actually hoping to find an image of the CD somewhere as I don't want to invest too much money in this since I don't really know if replacing the hard drive will fix my problem. I figured if I could get the software for free it would be worth trying.

I don't actually use the TV Guide at all since I have satelite, however, I like this unit because it is the only one I have ever found that has component inputs.

I think these are the steps I am going to have to use:

    1. Try to find a program that will defragment a hard drive with unknown formatting (so far no luck so I am about to move to step 2).

    2. Do a disk to disk copy from my friends hard drive (he has the exact same PVR) to my existing hard drive.

    3. Do a disk to disk copy from my friends hard drive to a NEW hard drive (this should copy the formatting and operating system).

    4. Give up and exchange this unit with Philips

Jeff I did find the CD from Partstore.com Part number 3122 785 90710 http://www.partstore.com/PartSearch.aspx?PartNumber=312278590710
$36.96
Install the new Maxtor 120G drive order the 3122 785 90017 cable to the unit and a PC and enter windows Hyperterminal program.
http://www.partstore.com/PartSearch.aspx?PartNumber=3122+785+90017&x=28&y=16
$22.25
Power the unit on type 2107 at the Hyperterminal Prompt and the drive will format and install the demo videos to the factory settings. If you need assistants my email it [email protected].
This unit is worth the time to fix since no other on the market has the TV Guide.

I stopped the formating of my hard drive and then try to reinstall windows xp, the set up stays at 27% at copying driver.cab. it been more then hour it running.

Hello,
You may have to try formatting your HDD again. If you have bad sectors on the hard drive, an incomplete format will not be able to flag back sectors so your windows install might be trying to copy to a bad location on the HDD. (speculation) your HDD may have no bad sectors, but this is one example of what could happen with an incomplete format.
You might also have a dirty install CD. take the CD out and look at it. If it is full of finger marks you might want to clean it and try again.

No hard drive page in bios

If the hard drive has not been formatted you will need to boot to the operating system cd. Each hard drive manufacturer has their own drive manager program which you can download and burn to cd on another computer as well. You do not need to have the same brand as the original. If you have any trouble with the formatting please tell me and I will help you. Steve Medley

2nd HDD

Check Computer Management / Disk Management. Windows on Windows XP, Probably the Drive needs formatting first and partitioning before it will visible on My Computer. By Default the new Hard Drive is "Unpartitioned / Unallocated". So acess disk Management to format and partition the Hard Drive.

To access the computer management and disk management and create and partition under disk management, Check Videos for guide :
