Philips HDRW720 DVD Recorder Questions & Answers
Philips HDRW720/17 won't turn on
I have a DVDR725H, which is the same as a HDRW720 but has a 160GB hard disk.
This error code (FAIL 0900 05) is displayed when the DVD drive has been completely removed/disconnected or is not responding.
Note that the DVD drive (VAD8041) is apparently known to have its DVD motor driver chip (SA56202TW) getting destroyed due to overheating. There is a repair kit available (about 10-15 EUR) that comes with a zener diode and two capacitors (order number 996500029182).
Note that it might be easier to get some used philips DVD+HD product that has the same DVD drive, e.g. the DVDR610 or DVDR615 and use that as a replacement.
Can the Philips HDRW 720
Hi roadtoad,
It's very easy to convert this recorder from analog to digital with the addition of a simple and inexpensive digital tuner/converter/set-top box. The difference between an analog and digital recorder is the tuner. This unit only has an analog tuner. Therefore, it needs to be connected to a dedicated digital tuner or another device which has a built-in digital tuner.
Before you rush out and buy anything, you should consider whether you actually need a dedicated digital tuner for this unit. If you have already have a digital tuner of some description you may be able to connect this to the Philips recorder, which will effectively convert it to digital. This recorder also has i/Link so it may be possible to record from your TV, if it has a digital tuner and appropriate video out sockets.
If you can let me know which other devices the recorder is connected to, i.e. the brand and model number of your TV and cable/satellite receiver (if you are using one), I may be able to tell you a way of "converting" the recorder to digital without buying anything.

Philips HDRW720 won't turn on
Okay. I found that there IS a manual release for the disc tray
UNDERNEATH the unit. It is a sort of toggle lever that you have to
slide to the other side and that releases the disc. The Manual does not
even mention this manual release lever!
Also, it may be hidden or covered by a paper like cover.
Once I cleared the disc out, I was able to re-set and re-start the unit.

Hi,
There are three things you can do that will eventually give you a working solution. Depending on the level of problem. Start with 1 progress to 3 until it works.
1. Use a cleaning disc. (one that use an alcohol based liquid)
2. If the cleaning disc does not solve it, you can use an ear bud, with some iso-propyl alcohol to clean the DVD lens on the drive directly. (you have to open the player and the drive)
3. The guaranteed working solution is to replace the DVD drive inside the player. This is quite a simple process, as most players use a standard IDE DVD-ROM or DVD writer.
You simply remove the face plate, (apply power to the drive, and press eject first) the tray will open. Unclip the tray face, and then with the tray open you can unclip the plastic face plate too.
Remove the old drive, and fit the new drive by reversing the removal procedure.
Once everything is assembled you should be able to watch DVD's again. If you can't find a cheap DVD drive locally, try ebay.
I have done this on over 50 players for my clients in the past. I use LG DVD roms and DVD writers for the DVD recorders, irrespective of brand.
Let me know how it goes.
