Title: Setting up Cable Internet for the RV082 Article ID: 16585

Most cable Internet Service Providers (ISP) use a Media Access Control (MAC) Authentication to establish Internet connections for end-users. A MAC address is assigned a unique 48-bit (6-byte) integer that is attached to an Ethernet NIC for each computer. To set-up your Linksys router to a Cable ISP, you have to do MAC Cloning. MAC Cloning is a procedure which enables a router to copy the MAC address of the PC that's registered with the ISP.

NOTE: Before proceeding, use the computer that can go online when connected to the modem and follow the steps below.
Step 1:
Connect the Broadband modem to the computer using an Ethernet cable without the router installed and make sure that the Internet connection is active. If it is not, contact your ISP. If it can go online, the PC connected to the modmy dsl internet light stays red when plugged into - kb16585_001_en.png's registered with the ISP.
kb16585_001_en.png NOTE: The image may vary depending on the computer and modem you're using.

Step 2:
Once an active Internet connection is established through the modem, connect the modem and the computer to the router by following the instructions below.
Step 3:
After ensuring that you have an active Internet connection, connect the modem to the router's Internet port and the computer to any of the four Ethernet ports.
Step 4:
The Linksys router's front panel will indicate the status of the connection. After connecting the broadband modem to the WAN or Internet port, the computer to an available numbered port and powering on the router check the lights on the front panel of the router. For instructions, click here.

Step 5:
Access the router's web-based setup page. For instructions, click here.

Step 6:
Go to the Setup - Network, click the drop-down arrow under the WAN Connection TypeObtain an IP automatically for WAN1.

kb16585_002_en.png If you are going to have another Cable Internet as well in WAN2, select obtain an IP automatically as well.
kb16585_003_en.png Step 7:
Click Save Settings.

Step 8:
Check in the System Summary if the router is getting a WAN1 IP or WAN2 IP.

Step 10:

Step 11:
Click System Summary. Check the value of the WAN1 or WAN2. If these have numbers, this means the router has been properly configured. You should now be able to access the Internet. If you're not online, perform a power cycle to synchronize the router with the modem.
kb16585_007_en.png NOTE: If the WAN1 IP or WAN2 IP is all zeroes (0.0.0.0) click first Release then click Renew buttons. If the WAN1 IP or WAN2 IP is still all zeroes (0.0.0.0) perform a power cycle.

If the IP Address starts with 192.168.1.xxx or if it has the same first three numbers (octets) as the router's IP address, change the router's LAN IP address to a different LAN segment.

Step 12:
Once the router is configured, perform a power cycle. Shutdown the computer and Unplug the router's power cable. Unplug the Broadband modem's power cable and wait for 30 seconds then plug in the Broadband modem's power cable and wait for its lights to appear stable. Plug in the router's power cable once the modem's lights appear stable.

Step 13:
Power on the computer on and test the Internet connection.

NOTE: If you're not online after performing this procedure, you may need to upgrade the firmware of the router. For instructions, click here .

If i buy a dell inspiron 580 that does not have a modem, can i still plug it into the dsl router and get internet okay?

Yes, you do not need a modem. You connect a LAN cable from the computer to the DSL modem to access your Internet Service Provider.

Hi, my router is reset a couple days ago and i get my internet back but for some reason i get internet but it only good for a few minute. I test the internet box that find there isn't any problem with my...

Losing internet can be a pretty common thing. Let's try these steps
1) Unplug the power from your router and DSL/Cable modem for 10 minutes. 2) Plug in your DSL/Cable Modem. Make sure all the status lights are okay per your manual. This might take several minutes 3) Plug in your Router, again wait until all lights are okay. 4) Restart all computers on your network.
If you still get problems, call your ISP to verify no internet issues are in the area. If there aren't you probably have a bad router and should get it replaced.

What does a red internet light mean and how do I fix it? I recently moved and when I plugged in my router the dsl light is green and the internet light is red. When I look at my laptop it says I am...

You'll need to contact your ISP and have the DSL service moved to the new line. The laptop sees the mdem or router and thinks it's connected, but the red internet light tells you the connection is not complete to the phone company.

Computer wont connect to internet with router

Troubleshooting steps:
1) Make sure that you can get it to work if you go from the cable/DSL modem directly to your computer
2) Assuming that works, disconnect the cable from the back of the computer and plug it into the WAN/INTERNET connection on the router and take a different cable and go from one of the LAN ports (labelled 1-4, typically) to the computer
3) turn off the computer, unplug the router and unplug the cable/DSL modem. Plug in the cable/DSL modem and wait for the lights to stabilize. Plug in the router and wait for the lights to stabilize. Finally, turn on the computer and try it.

We have just tried to set up a belkin N wireless router and the modem red light stays flashing. Therefore , we have not been able to connect with the wireless

If you follow these steps it should clear up your issue.

  1. Unplug power from your modem, router and computer (turn off computer). Check to make sure your modem does not have a back up battery in it.
  2. Plug the coax (cable) or phone line (dsl) into your modem
  3. Plug an ethernet cable from your modem to the router. Make sure it is plugged into the "internet" port.
  4. Turn the modem on and wait 40 seconds for the lights to come on and the system to boot up fully.
  5. When it is up, plug the power into the router. Wait another 40 seconds to a minute for all the lights to come on and be green.
If this does not help please let me know and we can move further with your support. Routers can sometimes be very sensitive.

Good Luck,

1st: Have you paid your bill?
2nd: Have you power cycled?
Full Power Cycle is as follows:

Turn off all components plugged into the router(Computers, Printers, etc.) Unplug the power from the router. Unplug the data cable(DSL, Coax) going TO the router. Wait aprox. 1 minute. Plug data cable and power cable back into router. Wait about 1 minute. Turn computers back on. Problem Solved?

If not and you're using DSL make sure all DSL filters are in place and that none have come undone. Make sure the phone line is still plugged in. Problem Solved?

If not contact your ISP and ask if they are doing any maintenance in your area that may by effecting your service. Ask them to perform a line test on you. If all else fails ask them to have a technician come out and help solve the issue.

Power Light Is Red, Internet Light Is Green, Other Lights Off

Check cable connections.

Try unplugging router from power for five minutes.

If that does not work call Internet Service provider to check if there is a problem with their server.

2Wire 473 router problem

Take the modem and plug it into a GFCI outlet. You can find one in the bathroom or the kitchen.

If the power light comes on solid green and the dsl comes on red then the modem is good. Was it plugged into a power strip by the computer? If so, plug it straight into a wall outlet.

If the power light comes on solid red then the modem has hardware failure. I would contact your ISP and have them replace it if it is still underwarranty.
