Is it possible to have a wireless usb internet connection for laptops. Being able to connect to the internet no matter where you are, within reason of course. Or do you have to have a internet hub or seperate modem in your home for the wireless internet to work.
Say for example I want to, for some reason use my laptop and internet in a park someplace. What do I need to make this happen and what distance restrictions if any are there.
Thanks!

It is possible to plug a USB wireless adapter into your laptop and connect almost anywhere, however there are limitations; You won't be connecting to your own ISP unless you are within range of your wireless router, and you need to be within range of ANY wireless router to get wireless internet access at all.
What makes wireless connections convenient in a laptop is the fact that many businesses - coffee shops, bars, hotels, even McDonalds - offer free wireless access, or very low subscription rates.
I'd also like to point out that you may not need to purchase a wireless USB adapter; If your laptop was built anytime between 2005 and today, then it most likely has a wireless card already built in; refer to the laptop's owner's manual, or the manufacturer's web site, for more info.
*Note* If you find that a USB device, or built in wireless adapter, don't have as much range as you'ld like, most computer stores sell seperate antennas for boosting range.
Hope this helps!

Some access points have codes, your laptop has to be able to pick up a access point. But in 2012, There will be a thing called Wi-max which means Wireless internet will be all over the world no matter where you are. So you can go on the internet wherever you are as long as you can connect to someones access point.
