My 6 year old Whirlpool Calypso washing machine was almost finished with the cycle, when it stopped -- with the error "CE" (Communications Error). I tried restarting it numerous times and the error repeats itself. I've also tried unplugging the machine, but I continue to get the error. Can you help explain what's happening and if there is anything I can do, besides call a repairman?? Thank you!

I had the same problem. The washer control board has an intermittent failure. If you unplug power for about 30 minutes then plug it back in you will get a PF code (power failure). Ignore this code and push start again. It may run till it finishes the cycle or it may start cycling again right away. A new board costs about $180 at repairclinic.com

Communications Error. If there is any breakdown in communication between the machine controller and the motor controller, "CE" flashes and the unit beeps once. All of the possible causes require service of some kind. You can google for the service manual of your model # if you are so inclined to try self-service repairs but you need to be comfortable working with electronic circuit boards (behind the control panel). I would not attempt any of this kind of repair unless you had some experience, for you can make the problem worse if you do not handle the electronics correctly.

"FL" flashes if any overfill condition occurs. This condition occurs when excessive water in the tub causes the overfill switch to trip. The control must realize that the trip was due to an overfill condition instead of a suds lock condition in order for "FL" to be displayed.

With an overfill condition, the beeper repeats a warning every 10 seconds with no time out. The pump is cycled in drain mode for 30 seconds on, 30 seconds off until the overfill switch resets or power is discontinued to the unit.
