Canon Rebel XT / EOS 350D Digital Camera Logo
Anonymous Posted on Oct 20, 2010

I have a Canon Digital EOS Rebel XT and the built-in flash no longer pops up when needed. This started happening after using a Canon speedlite, but then removing it. I've tried resetting everything, and tried all modes expecting that the ones listed in the manual as using a flash would work, but they dont, it never pops up. I lifted up the flash with my fingernail manually, and then tried taking a picture where a flash was most definitely needed, but it still had a long delay, no flash, and the pictures come out blurry. I am not getting any error message. Thanks for any advice you can offer.

    Hello Sai,

I cleared custom functions and all settings, set the camera to full auto mode, and the flash still isn't working. Do you have any other ideas?

    Thanks,

    Holly

The manual says I can disable an external flash using the custom functions. However, mine is already set to 'Emit' for the internal flash (the other options are 'does not emit' and 'only emits external flash'). I cannot find any other settings for external flashes, so if this is the one you meant, it appears the camera is set correctly for the internal flash to be used. But it is still not working.

Well, removing the battery did not work either.

But I finally got a response from Canon, and apparently there is an issue with the hotshoe safety getting stuck. I will try their tips on getting it un-stuck, and may end up having to take it in for service if none of them work.

    Thanks for your suggestions.

In addition to resetting all the camera settings you should also choose the "clear all custom functions" option that is also available from the same menu. Once that's done. Put the camera in Full Auto mode and see if the issue is resolved.

I remember seeing an option to disable the external flash so that the cam will use the in-built flash. Did you try that too?

  • Anonymous Oct 21, 2010

Oh Dear! THats what I meant! Alright there is one more thing we can try. Remove the battery from the cam. Hold for a minute and then put it back in. Then while powering it on press and hold the on button for ten seconds. That should get the cam to use the inbuilt flash

Glad to hear that. I hope it works! Good luck.

We have a Canon rebel XT EOS the flash pops up no matter what the

Frustrating I am sure. I had the same problem on my first XTi. I cannot remember what the settings were, but I think I was set for portrait and had flash set as the white balance default source. Therefore the camera always popped up the flash assuming that I wanted or needed fill flash.

Change you white balance to sun/shade/tungston etc as is appropriate, choose a faster ISO speed in lower light levels and try using the P or Tv mode and use a shutter speed that generates a middle range aperature for your particular lens.

I have a canon digital rebel xt with a speedlite 200e flash. The flash is not working in full auto mode, although the built in flash is. I have replaced the batteries in the flash and the ready light comes...

In auto mode, the flash works only if it is necessary. You are saying that the flsah doesn't work in auto mode, and I assume that in other modes it's working properly. That means there is nothing wrong with the flash. So don't worry about the flash, it will fire in necessary, in full auto mode.

Eos flash

Been there done that. The pop up flash seems to be the weak link on this camera. Make life easier for yourself and get much better results for flash pictures - buy a Canon speedlite. Look on ebay.

Err 05

In my case, I borrowed a camera and when I got it back, err 05 appears. I've located a bit of old orange juice which sticked one of the sensors - you can see the sensors when flash is popped out.

Flash

I found the answer and fixed my flash. Look on http://photo.net/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg?msg_id=00ODWf

This will describe how, if you have been using a speedlite alot, than the little tab under the shutter release side of the hot shoe can get bent down thus constantly pressing down (toward the bottom of the camera) the small button which deactivates the pop-up1.gif flash even when the speedlite is not attached. Just bend the tab up a little with a jewler's screwdriver, turn the camera off and on and voila!! Fixed!!! Dan describes pushing the tab down, but on the xti, the tab needs to be bent up to release the flash deactivation switch and fix the problem. Thanks to Dan D on photonet for saving me a service call.

Built-in flash auto pop-up problem

Does the 'pop up' pop up? If it does and still says obstructed- closes it and pop it again If it still persists Canon customer support will advise the next move. If a repair price seems high you could perhaps get a separate flash if the camera accepts them.
