My Maxtor 4 500 GB hard drive sounds like it's trying to run, but then it says that It's not connected to my computer. The little front light is lit up, but then it says it's not connected to my laptop. It's been working great before now?

This could be something as simple as the cable has gone bad. I would replace it first. If that does not work try this.
1.Right click the My Computer icon on desk top. If you do not have My Computer on the desk top it can be found in the Start Menu. It may just say Computer.
2.After right clicking it go to Properties in the drop down menu and left click it. You will get a window looking like this.

If you have Vista. I think Windows 7 is similar. Windows XP will be a window with tabs at top.
3.Open the Device Manager and you will get a window with a list of devices that are installed on you
PC. Looking like this.
In the list you should see your Maxtor it's probably down in the USB section. If you can't find it, it means you need to reinstall the drivers. If you do find it right click on it. You will have a drop down menu with different options on it. You can try uninstalling it reboot the PC and see if it auto finds it.

Hope this was helpful.
Good Luck

I have a maxtor III usb 2.0 500 GB external hard drive. the light on the front goes out and works sometimes. when the light goes out the external drive gets disconnected . i checked for loose connections....

Possibly, the USB is not receiving current enough and occasionally it resets the USB interface. Try connecting it to another system, or to a powered USB host, and see what happens.
Another possibility (but you'd need to disassemble the external enclosure and connect directly the disk inside to a SMART-capable motherboard) is that the hard disk is developing a fault.

The green light on my maxtor external 80gb harddrive comes on as usual, then the orange light comes on now and my computer does not recognize it at all (Windows XP). It's been working fine for maybe 5...

Shut it off and unplug it from power. Let it sit for a day before trying to connect again.

Make sure you've rebooted your computer before trying it again.

Hard drives fail sometimes but so do the enclosures to - so you may still have the data.

If it does work - backup everything immediately.

If it's clicking - that's the sound of death for hds.

SimpleTech 80 GB Portable HD Won't Read

It sounds like a problem with the board inside the case,- the actual hard drive is probably OK. Opening the case will void any warranty but there may not be much left anyway. There should be 4 screws in the bottom of the drive,- front 2 may be hidden under a sticker. Try installing the drive in your new case or an empty drive bay inside your computer. I have had external hard drive cases fail before and the actual hard drive was ok.

Adding a hard drive to a PC

You need to set the little jumpers at the rear of the hard drive and the cd rom drive. Set the hard drive as Master and the cd rom as Slave. Both devices should then be recognized.

The drive is dying. If it is still under warranty, call Maxtor for a replacement.
