Hi.

It is called a lens error. Problem is called by dert inside lens gears or by a part that has became defective. In some case, the lens try extending, as they cannot reach full extension they retract or stall, until the camera shuts down. In your case the lens extended and got stuck.

First step is resetting the camera by removing battery for one minute. Ensure that you put fully charged battery and restart. In some occasions the reset may work.

First try removing internal battery and restarting the camera, also ensure that the camera is not set in PC mode, but in shooting mode.

You can attempt pushing the lens gently back in the camera while turning the camera off. Sometimes this can help the lens back in.

If that does not work, then the lens must be taken apart.
The lens assembly is very delicate and it is made of small gears and parts. If you do not have enough experience, with DIY disassemblying there is always a good chance that you end up with the camera turned into a bulk of tiny bits and pieces.

I summarized the problem in this article: Lens Error.

Try following the steps in the article if that does not work I suggest calling Panasonic at the number listed on manual. You can also get a quote from a third party service here: Repair.

How to slove system error(zoom) of my panasonic lumix dmc-fs15

Here are some troubleshooting steps that you can try that may (or may not) correct it. They only seem to work for less than 40% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty (or repair cost approaches that of the camera), they're worth that try. Some of the later steps do involve some risk to the camera, so carefully weigh your options before deciding to conduct them:

System Error (Focus) ...Lumix DMC-FS15 works, pauses, then results in a white error screen with the following error message:

My camera started bringing up "system error (zoom)" and it was completely inoperable. I would turn it off, but the lens wouldn't retract unless I applied slight pressure to it. I was able to FIX this problem by applying some lubricant oil to a Q-tip and swiping it around the telescoping parts of the lens, being very careful to stay away from the actual lens. I turned the camera on and off a few times so the oil could work its way into the parts, and it fixed the problem. I don't know if it will be a long term solution, but I can at least download my pictures to my computer now!

I have an FS15 and get the error message, 'system error zoom' the lens is not centred and does not retract. The camera has not been dropped and is c15m old.

Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ... Unfortunately, many cameras that fall prey to this can only be corrected by professional repair. But, here are some things that you can do that may correct it. They only seem to work for less than 40% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try.

Have a Panasonic DMC-FS15 and get message saying "turn off and back on" followed by "system error (focus)" Have tried taking battery out for length of time and making sure charged, blew...

I have this exact problem. I note, your issue is happening at the same time. Weird.

Tried a variety of other "fixes" but none seemed to solve this issue. Thoughts?
