First you need to decide what type of broadband service you require and these are -
1. DSL which uses your existing telephone line.
2. Cable which uses a cable service and can include a cable TV service.
3. A wireless 3G network which uses the mobile/cell phone service and can be separate or combine with your cell phone account
Note - combined services generally offer discount pricing and may include a modem/wireless router.

If you use a wireless router with the DSL or Cable Internet service and your laptop has a wireless card then you can also connect to the Internet at WiFi hot spots like McDonalds, Star Bucks, the Airport etc.
If you use the wireless 3G wireless network, then you can access the Internet anywhere where your ISP has 3G wireless coverage. You need to check the service coverage area where you need Internet service.

Once you decide what type of broadband your require, then you need to check with the various Internet Service providers to see if they can offer and the cost of the various plans.
Note the download limits and the associates additional cost if you exceed the monthly download limits.

Once you sign up with a Internet Service provider, their documentation will include setting up instructions and/or installation CD.

Hi do you know how I can connect my lap top to the internet wireless with my linksys wireless router ? the lap top asks for an access code and I do not know what it is or how to find it do you know how to...

The access code or password is the encryption key in your wireless router, without this key the wireless router won't allow the laptop/computer to connect to this wireless router.
The WEP, WPA, WPA2 encryption key is in your router's wireless settings. Log into your router and got to the wireless settings, you will need to get the SSID and the encryption key. Then go to your computer/laptop's wireless card and configure it with the router's SSID and encryption key, so it will then connect to the wireless router and the Internet.

To secure your wireless network from unauthorized access, please click on this link and follow my instructions :-http://www.fixya.com/support/r3559128-wireless_router_security

I have recently moved house from a virgin broadband connection taking my router and lap top with me. My new home has existing virgin broadband. Having plugged everything in as should be my laptop finds the...

Try reseating te broadband connection to the router.

It soundslike your router works if it connects to your laptop with a great signal. But its not sending any information through.

Try reseating. if it does not work. you might need to do a fresh reinstall of the router. Usually the broadband connections attach itself to a mac address of a network card. If you recently put a new router the network cards MAC address is different and it might not send signals through. like for me for cable i have the same issue.

Try this let me know how it does. If any problems please let me know.

I hope this helps

Email

Ports make no difference, but the fact that you are accessing the email account from 2 different systems is likely the issue. If you are reading the email in outlook or outlook express on both systems, the mail is being downloaded from the server to each system and deleted from the server.

Two ways to resolve this.

1. Check email at work via webmail interface so that the items are not downloaded from the server.

OR

2. Set the email client settings to retain mail on the server.

example:

Personally, I use option #1.

When I check my charter account on my desktop, I use outlook. From my laptops, I use www.charter.net to check that account.
