Software Firewalls and Linksys Routers

You can never have too much security, however there are some firewalls that will not work with hardware firewalls, that includes the all Linksys Routers . Keeping this in mind, some software firewall will continue working after the router is installed. If it does, it shouldn't need to remove it, because it's an extra layer of security. However if there are difficulties using the Internet with the Software firewall after installing the router, try disableing it to see if internet is accessable. If the internet works after disabling the software firewall, then remove the firewall.

I've connected my Router to switch and through

The two wireless routers THINK they are directly connected to the Internet and they prevent the WAN side ports from being pinged so hackers can't find out you have a device on the Internet. The devices will let you to the Internet without any problems, why do you need to ping from the router to the WiFi routers anyway. all of that is your internal network....One thing that might fix this is if you can put the WiFi routers in BRIDGE mode. Some routers will let you do that, some won't. Don't put the router that is facing the internet into bridge mode. hackers will be able to see your whole network.

I have an N900 router that I want to secure from outside the home use

To connect to your wireless router, the router's wireless settings needs to be configured with the SSID, encryption etc. and also the wireless cards in all the laptops/computers needs to be configured with these router's wireless settings. Then the laptops/desktop computers can communicate with your wireless router. Connect a LAN cable from the Linksys to the LAN port on your computer. Open a browser and enter the Linksys configuration URL http://192.168.1.1 The default login = admin The default PW = admin You can protect your router by changing the default admin PW (write it down and put it in a safe place) Go to the wireless configuration and set up the SSID and WPA or WPA2 encryption to protect your wireless network and Internet from unauthorized access. Now apply these settings to the wireless card in your laptop/computer. To secure your wireless network from unauthorized access, please click on this link and follow my instructions :- http://www.fixya.com/support/r3559128-wireless_router_security

BEFSR41 router power light will not stop blinking,

In order to get your router back to the original settings, you must push in the reset button (usually on the back of the router) for somewhere between 10 and 30 seconds depending on the router. You may need a pin or something small to push in the button, because it can be recessed. Once you have reset the router, the username and password will be changed to the defaults, admin and password, respectively. One thing you must remember is that resetting the router will change all of the router settings back to the factory settings. This means you will lose all of the changes you made since you got the router. Make sure to write down any things you've changed, so you can change them back after the reset. Also, I recommend updating to the latest firmware after the reset.

There a great article at General Router Setup.

Hi chrismoore,

Welcome to Fixya. To access the router page just open a browser then type 192.168.1.1, the Default username is blank and the password is admin. Go to the Wireless Tab select Wireless Security under the Security Mode you will see there Network Key or Wep Key. The Network Key or Wep Key serves as a password or security code on your network to make it secure.

If this works dont forget to say thanks. Thanks for using Fixya.

Hello,i have a problem with

That's because a stable connection is not being determined by the router. Call up you're ISP and inform them about the issue. There is probably a lot of distortion on you're phone line ! Ask them for a fiber optic upgrade !
Hope that answers your question !

I want to add a

you have 2 options to connect to the router on the computer.. either wired or wireless-- if you are connecting wirelessly then just ignore "cable isnt connected" --you can change the icons so it doesnt show in CONTROL PANEL>NETWORK CONNECTIONS

If your trying to get on the internet with a wireless connection.and running WINDOWS,(many problems with LINUX) .and have a wireless router all set up and configured to broadcast the signal (not hidden) ....

try resetting the router (disconnect the power to it for a few minutes) next --be sure the wifi switch is enabled on the netbook---TRY IT NOW--if still problems---go to CONTROL PANEL>NETWORK CONNECTIONS--right click oin your wifi card and choose properties--highlight INTERNET PROTOCOL and choose properties and be sure "OPTAIN IP ADDRESS AUTOMATICALLY" is checked--Does the laptop "SEE" the router?
You will need your SSID to logon to the router(internet)
follow this is a link to a troubleshooting flow-chart-Do check it out

How Could I Restar My Router

I think you meant "restart".

If it's simply locked up, just try unplugging the power supply for a few seconds and then plugging it back in. This will "restart" it, but will not reset anything.

If that doesn't solve the issue, then use a paper clip or similar item to press the "Reset" button on the back of the router for 15-20 seconds (while it is plugged in). This will put the router back to its factory condition. You'll have to re-enter your custom settings, if any, and the logon info/password will be reset to the factory default. You can then reset those as well.

Network "cant find the server."

Where did you see that error message? Other web site working?
Did you set DNS server to your router or your ISP's server IP address? I suggest you to use the internal IP address of your router as the default gateway and the DNS server setting on your computer if necessary. On your router, you can set to use ISP's DNS server if necessary. Usually you don't need to set anything on your router, it will detect it for you automatically. For some web sites, you may need to open some more port and have your ISP check all the settings on their site to make sure everything is working if you added the router recently.
