My Zenith Z42P3 plasma TV, which is about 3 years old, has developed an issue. At times, the screen won't come on. The sound comes on fine, but the picture won't.

Hi

Thanks for using FixYa. As Plasma TV is a very hard working device so it produces lots of heat and around 75% issues in Plasmas are caused due to overheating. To start with you'll have to open the back of the unit and check for any bulged/bad capacitors on Y and Z-sus boards. As the sound is working fine so it seems that the power supply is fine, also check the control board for any bulged capacitors. You can click on this link to buy the parts. Please accept the solution if the issue is resolved or post a comment for further assistance.

Thanks
Rylee

Sears has a 42" zenith plasma for $449. Is this a good buy or does this tv have problem history?

In my Professional opinion of which I repair these all day long, NO Plasma 3-4 years old is worth that amount of money. The first time it goes down you "will" put it to rest....Guaranteed!
Please don't do it!

TV made a loud pop sound now picture is real dim.

Don't know much about the newer tv's but in the old days when they did that the guns at the back of the tube where on the way out.. my guess is the modern equivalent is happening..you need to check the vision card.

Picture is gone! :*(

the picture tube (what makes the TV picture work) has blown out. Just call you nearest tv reapair shop and purchase a new one. (these are kind of expensive!)

(Also, if it's fifteen years old, i think it's time to get a new T.V. hint. hint.)

Zenith Z42P3 "Invalid Format" message from upconverter DVD

Ran into the same problem with this DVD player and my LG tv. Try this:
Open the DVD tray, with the DVD tray open press the HDMI select button until the proper resolution for your tv is illuminated, put the DVD back in, close the tray and try again. Simple fix -- worked beautifully for me.

Good luck

P42W46X Zenith Plasma - No Picture - Mostly Yellow on screen

Mine looks like too, but the line running across isn't on my set, picture looks like this, and the sound works fine. I took the tuner board all the way out and turned the set on and it did the same thing, then I unplugged the top wire on the board next to the tuner board and the screen went black. plugged it back in and the screen came back with the scrambled picture. Anyone know why? Bad mainboard maybe? the left of the tuner board?
