We, too, have this Toshiba with a narrow horizontal image, the rest of the screen is black. Any ideas? Is it fixable affordably? Anything we (not TV repairmen) can try ourselves? Thanks.

Hi Paul,
The horizontal lines on the screen are virtually NEVER caused by a bad T-con board. These horizontal lines indicate a defective LCD panel (screen). The Screen has small ICs that become defective overtime and that it isn't fixable unless replacing the entire screen.
Sounds like you have a horizontal timing error causing the mirrored image. It is fixable but would require the main board to be replaced. The part number is 23783078 but appears to be no longer available.
You aren't specsificly dercribe yor tv set. For common TV horizontal problem ;i.e : White line accross the horizontal screen, horizontal band,etc..it's can solved by replacing the IC Vertical/Transistor, and olso to replace the cap nearest the IC.
For common TV Vertical Problem :i.e : White line at the center of the screen (top to bottom),Vertical band,etc...It's can cure by Replacing the Horizontal IC/Transistor,and offcurse the cap's.
ok! you have defective horizontal linearity check horizontal section then check capacitors! like 180uf 200v or 200uf 200v. the problem is defective capacitors!
Pulling in from the sides usually results from poor regulation or width problems related to the horizontal circiut. These are not usually repaireable by a non technician.
