Check to see if you have the current version of Itunes via update If you do, then try plugging the ipad into another usb port, if available. If not update and then try. Turning all other applications helps Certain antivirus applications sometimes interfere You may need to uninstall itunes and then reinstall if the above tips fail

also you can install itunes on a new user on you cpu and it will update all users !

if you uninstall and reinstall itunes you will not lose any muisc or data - Apple it too smart for that kind of risks - here is the directions

try the "start, all programs" route.
click start, all programs, quick time, and select uninstall from there.

Uninstall the egzisting itunes by following steps. Start menu> Control panel>click on the Control Panel home on the upper left side>same windows you will see the programs and under Unisnstal a program waith for list of programs refreshes highlight Itunes and press the Uninstall tab and reinstall the Itunes

Sometimes you can resolve it by doing the following:
- Download the .exe file from Apple.com/iTunes
- Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs
- iTunes > Remove
- Open C:\Program Files (default location)
- Find "iTunes" (default folder name)
- Shift + Delete > OK
- Run a registry cleaner, such as PC Tools Desktop Maestro, to remove all old shortcuts and registry keys no longer valid on your computer.
- Start > Shut Down > Restart your computer
- Run the iTunes install program

This should fix the problem, however may require also to update your Windows software (update.Microsoft.com) and download the latest Visual Basic Runtime executable. One time during my clean reinstall the iTunes software mentioned an error with a vb run executable and couldn't continue the install until I found it online.

try to uninstall the the latest version of itunes on your pc and then go back to what the version you are using. After that, update your old itunes, not install your latest version.
