The "Red Screen of Death" usually happens in later PS3 Fat models right after you have turned on the PS3. It can happen right after the PS3 logo and wave animation appears. It is a mysterious error that seem to be software related during the checking process (perhaps some corruption in nand flash or harddrive block). When the error occurs, the screen turns red, and you see a message:

A serious error has occurred. Contact technical support for assistance.

Well, of course you should first try unplugging, replugging, turning it off on the backside button, turning it back off, holding the on/off button 3-4 seconds while it is on, and so on.

If neither of all these things work, there might be corrupted data or you might need a firmware update (hate those on mp3's, then how is it on ps3's? >.<).

But for those, you would need to contact customer support, as it says on your red screen message.

Contact Sony but it sounds like you have screwed up your OS. Did you turn it off during an update?

It is some error on your PS3.

You shall return it to Game Stop and buy a new system.Do not buy a PS3 anymore if you are alerted.

this is probably an warning about problems with your hardware (such as gpu or ram modules) .
The only thing you can do is taking the system to an assistance centre for hardware checking, they will test all the components of the system .

if your system is covered by warranty, don't waste time and call sony as soon as you can !!

unfortunately, there isn't any firmware solution to fix it, because all system functionality is prejudiced.
the only thing you can do (i belive it wont work), is reseting av settings by holding the on;off button when starting up the system .

Usually it's a motherboard issue, but you can try booting the PS3 WITHOUT the hard drive installed and see what happens.

okay if the problem persists every time you turn your system on, try holding the on button on the front of the console down until you hear a second beep. that will reset the system. if the system turns on without the screen, back up your data onto an external hard drive, and reinstall the ps3 through the settings menu. the reason that you are getting this error is either because of faulty hardware or software. so we are going to try the software approach first, if this doesn't work, please message me back saying if it did or not.
