Sounds like it could be a bad inverter for the screen lamp. If it is a bad inverter and the tv is still under warranty you should send it back for a replacement or repair. If the tv is not under warranty and you have some experience working on electronic devices you could probably find a replacement inverter online and replace the bad one.

What's my next step in diagnosing my Vizio LCD TV picture issue?

Hi Tim,
If all the boards you replaced were good and working, the only thing remains is the panel if the backlights are on. Please see that the LVDS cable is carrying voltage to the Tcon board.
Good luck.

TV is working beautifully then the screen goes dark for 3-15 seconds and then the image reappears in beautiful HD. The TV is two years old and otherwise works perfectly

Technology changes at a high rate of speed, as we all know. And High Definition (HD) has come a long way in a very short period. Since your television still works perfectly otherwise, I don't think that it's a problem with the set itself. It may only be a victim of technology.

Does this only happen with High Def channels? Does it happen every time you change to another HD channel? If you answer 'yes' to either of these, it is most likely due to the television's processing capabilities. Because of the high amount of data that is required to deliver HD content, manufacturers have found creative (but not necessarily convenient) ways of dealing with the processing issues (blank screen delay for example). Since the audio and video signals for any given television station (either HD or regular) are transmitted separately, the television has to process that data internally so that you get the picture and sound aligned properly when you are watching it. HD broadcasts are much more demanding than regular stations requiring manufacturers to constantly improve this processing speed with every new model. On some televisions, the channel remains blank for a few seconds to allow the television to configure all of the information so it looks good when it's ready, which could explain the delay you are describing. At the time your television was manufactured, this may have been the best technology your manufacturer had to offer. On my personal flat panel, I get the picture and sound right away, but I have to wait about 15 seconds for the sound to catch up to the picture which I think is more annoying than being forced to look at a blank screen. But that's just me.

Hope this information was helpful.

My Westinghouse 36 inch TV has picture and sound when I turn it on but when I change channels, the picture disappears and I have only sound. The picture comes back if you turn the TV off and back on but...

Hello, it sounds like your inverter board is goin out on the set, when you change channels if you notice on almost any TV the screen goes dark and the new channel appears, it sounds like you are not getting enough power out of the inverter board to power up the backlight enough to come on. This is why the sound remains because everything else works fine and the sound is connected to the main board.
