hi , instade of going thru USB, just plug a stereo RC pin to the Headphone socket of the iPod and the other RC connectors to the line in of the stereo system, play the Ipod, u can now hear it from ur steroe system.let me know

but i converted the songs to aac (via itunes) and everything seems to work fine now :)

I had this exact same problem. Here is how I just figured out how to fix it. First of all, my friend as an iTouch as well, so I plugged his iTouch into my DEH-P4000UB, similar to your 3100UB, and it actually worked and played music. So I went to my Music then selected a song and pressed pause. I turned on the car and then plugged the USB cable into my iTouch, exactly the same as yours. When I replugged my iTouch into my deck it gave me a different error this time, Error-19. Refreshing but still frustrating. So I turned off the car, unplugged the USB cable and tried it one more time. This time I selected "Repeat" on the song, don't ask me why, but this is exactly what I just did. I turned on the car, plugged the USB and it worked!!!

I get the same problem. I have a 2003 Envoy in which I installed the Boss BV7300. When I plug in my ipod I would get the player to read how many songs my ipod has and then it would freeze my player on the number 7 before it would play any songs. The cd/dvd player works fine. Now I plug in my ipod and it loads all the songs and then restarts the process and reads no disc. It's weird. I have tried reseting the radio. reseting the brain on my truck and removing and reinstalling the radio. No difference.
