Remove the memory card from the camera, look along the one edge for a tiny switch, slide it towards the contacts to unlock, " so photo's can be erased " if switch is in the unlock position slide it back and forth to reset and install it back in the camera. If this fails! replace the card.
first make sure the rewind button is not stuck down. open the back door and rotate the advance sprocket back and forth to release the button. if that did not work take the bottom cover off and check the white plastic gear near the take up shaft. if that gear broke it will have to be repaired by a camera repair person.
there are no new parts for this model so get a cost estimate first.
Your camera is trying to get your lens to respond the way it should. If the lens is faulty it will keep going in and out. Your only option is to repair the camera by Sony or local camera repair center.
I assume you have tried rotating the dial back and forth to try to clean the contacts when camera is off.
If this hasn't worked, try dropping some contact cleaner, available from radioshack or try alcohol first, with a toothpick under the edge of the dial when camera is on its back, at the same time rotating the dial back and forth. I haven't tried it, but the dial knob may pull off the camera if you can get a little pry under it.
If this doesn't work, consider getting a quote from a local camera shop, cause pana with be too expensive. Also, repairmen and those upgrading to the TZ5 sell very good TZ3's on ebay, and will buy yours the way it is. The difference you would pay for a sell and buy ebay will likely be less than a repair bill by a camera shop.
Try menu-> setup->setup1, initialize, ok- this resets calendar and time as well.
It brought mine back to correct mode selection.
Also make sure your battery is fully charged.
