Optical drives are more forgiving.
Make
sure it has power (ejects). Check Device Manager in Safe Mode by pressing F8
during boot. Right click My Computer > Manage. Select Device Manager >
View > Show Hidden Devices. Now delete all DVD/CD-ROMs and reboot. Windows
will say "New Hardware Found" and install.
Check the Windows Device ManagerDevice
Manager is a Windows program that displays hardware devices installed
on your computer that are currently recognized by Windows. If
functioning properly, each piece of hardware has a corresponding entry
in the Device Manager. If a piece of hardware is not listed, then there
is a problem. There can be a variety of reasons, ranging from the
easy-to-fix (such as missing or corrupted device drivers) to the more
serious (such as broken or malfunctioning hardware). If
your drive does not appear in Windows Explorer or there is no response
from the operating system when you insert a disc, then you should check
for an entry in Device Manager. This indicates whether there is a
problem or not, and sets the stage for subsequent troubleshooting
actions. To verify that the optical drive is listed in the Device Manager:
Remove any discs that may be present from the disk drive.
Click Start
, type device
into the search field, and then select Device Manager
from the list.
In the Device Manager window, expand the DVD/CD-ROM drives
entry.
There should be a name listed for each installed drive. If the drive is not listed or the DVD/CD-ROM drives
entry does not exist and you have verified that it is listed in the BIOS
, continue to the next troubleshooting item. reinstall the default device driversDevice
drivers are software processes that allow Windows to use the computers
hardware components. If the device driver fails or becomes corrupted,
then Windows cannot properly communicate with the drive; in fact, it
may not even recognize that the drive is connected at all.
Another
common source of disk drive problems is that the correct device driver
may have been inadvertently replaced with an incompatible one (for
example, a generic driver for optical disk drives mistakenly installed
by a third-party DVD burning program). In most cases, device driver
problems like these can be resolved by reinstalling the default drivers
and then installing any driver updates provided by HP. To reinstall the default device drivers:
Click Start
, right-click Computer
, and then select Properties
.
In the System pane, click Device Manager
link. If prompted, allow the computer to access the Device Manager.
In Device Manager, click the plus sign
(in Vista) or the arrow
(in Windows 7) next to the type of driver you want to uninstall and
reinstall (for example., Modems, DVD/CD-ROMs, and so on), unless a minus
sign (-) is already showing.
Right-click each listed driver one at a time and click Uninstall
. When prompted, confirm that you want to uninstall the selected drivers. Do not restart the PC In the Device Manager pane, select any listed device and click the Scan for hardware changes
button (near the top). Windows scans your system for hardware and installs default drivers for anything that requires drivers.
Open Device Manager and verify that your device drivers are listed once again.
After the device drivers have been reinstalled and appear in Device Manager, try running your program again. NOTE:Some
devices may require your computer to restart. Windows will notify you
when restarting is necessary. Save all open files and allow the computer
to restart.
If reinstalling the default drivers does not correct the problem, continue to the next troubleshooting item.
1.) start, control panel, system, hardware, device manager, 2.) locate a device with a yellow highlight 3.) right click it and select update , follow the onscreen instructions
or reinstall the driver using the driver cd. that came with it.
if that fails you need to go to the manufactures website for that particular device , locate the driver and download it, then install it. PS if its on the mainboard you can go to the OEM system builder you have like dell or hp , if you dont have and oem system go to the mainboad manufactures web site, Biostar and MSI.
hello
at end of this instruction set, see link to review more questions/answers,as your issue with CD/DVD ROM will vary .
This document applies to HP and Compaq desktop computers with Windows XP, Me, and 98.
Use this document to make Windows and the CD writing software recognize the CD or DVD writer drive. Start at Step 1; do not skip to other sections until Step 1 has been completed.Step 1: Does Windows detect the CD or DVD drive?
Use Device Manager to determine if Windows is recognizing the drive:
In Windows XP, click Start , and right-click My Computer .
In Windows 98 and Me, right-click the My Computer icon on the desktop.
In Windows XP, select Properties , click the Hardware tab, and then click the Device Manager button.
In Windows 98 and Me, select Properties , and click the Device Manager tab.
Click the plus sign (+ ) next to DVD/CD-ROM Drives (or similar) category.
Do the following depending on what is listed in the DVD/CD-ROM drives category:
If the CD or DVD drive name is missing , the drive is not being detected by Windows. Close Device Manager and skip to the section CD or DVD drive is not recognized by Windows .
If a drive name is shown but is disabled (icon is marked with a red X, ), the drive has been disabled. Right-click the drive name and select Enable . You may have to restart the computer to complete the enabling process. The drive should work correctly once it has been enabled.
NOTE:
If the drive cannot be enabled, a required service or driver that the drive needs is not functioning or has been disabled. Click the plus sign next to IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers and troubleshoot any problems found according to any error codes in Device Manager. Resetting the BIOS may also resolve this problem.
If the CD or DVD drive is listed as normal but your disc burning software does not recognize the drive, Device Manager shows no special icons . Windows is detecting the drive but the writing software does not. Leave Device Manager open and continue with the next section Disc burning software does not recognize the original drive .

hmm seems a lil odd it appears that maybe your internal computer hard drive is failing or that its not properly connected if its happened recently with no internal computer changes then its definitely the hard drive failing on you
This is from Microsoft and is from their code explanation page.
Code 10
loadTOCNode(2, 'moreinformation');
If the device has a "FailReasonString" value in its hardware key, that string is displayed as the error message. The driver or enumerator places this registry string value there. If there is no "FailReasonString" in the hardware key, the following generic error message is displayed:
This device is either not present, not working properly, or does not have all the drivers installed. (Code 10)
Try upgrading the device drivers for this device.
Solution button: Update Driver
To resolve this error code, make sure the device is connected to the computer correctly. For example, make sure all cables are plugged in fully and that all adapter cards are properly seated. Follow the suggested solution button and update the device driver. It may be possible to remove the device and redetect it using the Add New Hardware wizard.
From your description I understand that the DVD drive is not working and you have code 10 error in device manager. Do not worry, run the following fix on the pc and then restart the notebook.
This seems to me to be an AutoPlay issue, where the default action for blank CD-media is to format it, and might be a feature of your burning software. To resolve this, you could try the following:
Open AutoPlay by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking Hardware and Sound, and then clicking AutoPlay.
In the list next to the device or type of disc, click Ask me every time.
follow the steps
1#restart the computer with safe mode by tapping f8>chose windows xp> when you are desktop screen follow this.
2#start>right click on my computer>properties>hardware tab> device manager>on ide/ata controllers>uninstall the controllers if it wont let you that is fine.
3#start>click on run>regedit>click ok.
4# follow the roots
