When I download images the date created is the date downloaded rather than the date taken.

  • Anonymous Feb 10, 2010

I am right clicking the photo and looking at properties. There are three dates listed. One is date created. Previously when I downloaded images this was always the date the picture was taken. For some reason this has changed to the date downloaded. There must be a setting either on the camera or within the software to download it that has been changed but I can't find it.

The date created is just the date that the file was copied to your computer. If you look at the photo properties (stored in the "exif data" on the image file), you will see the shot date. You can also see this if you right click on the file icon and look at properties. It is usually displayed under the details tab in the section titled "Origin". The file data is stored by the computer and filesystem, but the shot date is actually a part of the file itself.

If you're doing it the same way you have done in the past, it should not have changed. File creation dates come from the operating system (I'm guessing that you're using windows).

If you copied the file, which is what most downloaders do, the file will get the current date as its create date.

If you moved the file, it would keep the original create date.

So if you want to have the same file create date (no reason to do this since the shot date is what's really important for a picture) you would need to use windows to open the folder for your pictures, and then use the "Move" command to put them in the new folder on your hard drive.

It might be that some photo downloaders use the Move command if you tell them to delete the photos after download, but all the ones I've used will do the copy and then delete the files afterwards.

Cannot get date to print on .jpeg images when downloaded

The date and time (and a lot more) are stored with every photo in its EXIF metadata. If you want the date printed on your photos then please refer to the documentation for whatever program you're using to print. Depending on the program and printer you may have the option of printing the date on the image, in the margins, or on the back.

How do i get the date the picture was taken to show when downloaded to my computer

In Windows explorer (file explorer where you look at the pictures), if you left click on the column headings you can add headings. There are a lot of headings that can be added. Look for Date Created (usually with video), Date Taken, and just "Date" click those checkboxes and widen your screen so you can see the new columns.

The date created is wrong on my photos

The file properties will always show the date downloaded, since that's the date the file was created on your hard drive. The date (and time) the photo was taken is stored in the file itself, in what's known as the EXIF data.

I don't know what operating system you're using, so I can't give you specific instructions on how to get the date the photo was taken. On Windows Vista, for example, if you click (not double-click) on a file in Explorer, the date taken will appear in the status area at the bottom of the window. Other programs will have different ways of displaying the EXIF data.

How do I place date stamp my photos when printing or download to PC?

As far as I'm aware, digital cameras don't date-stamp the images. Instead they store date and time in what is known as the EXIF information which is a component part of every digital image.
Look at the get-info file in photoshop or iPhoto or any other good image editing/filing program and all the infomation is there. Some cameras even put the GPS coordinates where the picture was taken too.
This is an example of some of the EXIF info taken from 1 image in my computer
Make: Pentax Corporation Model: Pentax *ist DL2 Date Time: 2006-08-06T13:38:49+01:00 Exposure Program: Aperture priority F-Stop: f/4.5 ISO Speed Ratings: 800 Focal length: 43.0 mm Flash: did not fire Metering Mode: Pattern
If you actually want to put the date on the print you'll have to use an image editor so that you can type it on.

It's very hard to troubleshoot software problems online, and it likely is a software issue. You may fix it, but it will pop up again some day. Camera/cable interface problems are notorious. But why put up with the headache of these software problems? Please see the following post, as it outlines a much easier, faster, and less error prone alternative way to download your photos:
