Secure Digital cards have a write-protect switch.

Turn off the camera.
Remove the memory card.
Find the switch along one edge. It needs to be closest to the contacts in order to enable writing. For best results, slide it fully away from the contacts and then back fully toward the contacts.
Reinsert the card.
Turn on the camera.

If that doesn't work, try a different card.

And if that doesn't work, then there may be a problem with the camera itself.

You must disable the hard drive first to remove the write protection. So, right click on the external drive to disable it, connect the hard drive. Go to My Computer and find the hard drive, right click on the hard drive and de-select/remove the tick on the check box and change it to read only, then exit.

I dont know how to delete a protected picture off my canon power shot a470 camera. Can you help?

You have to unprotect it first. It's a bit confusing because the menu item probably only says "Protect..." but it also takes care of unprotecting too. Go into the menu for "Protect..." and navigate to the protected one. Whatever button you press to switch the protected status (it's the SET button on my Canon) you can use it to turn the protection off as well. When you exit the protection mode, you can delete it.
