Must Reinstall to Print

I'm running my HP F380 on Vista. It installed fine the first time, and worked, but it has an EXTREMELY annoying tendency.

For instance, I print something. All is well. Turn my computer off, go to bed.
Next day, I turn my computer back on. Try to print something else - printer still shows up in the Printer Control Panel, but it is offline and will NOT turn online no matter what I do. I unplug the printer's USB and replug it, which reinstalls the printer to a second copy (F380 Copy 2). This second copy of the printer I can print from. But I have to do this reinstalling process EVERY TIME I want to print! At times, I've ended up with 5+ copies of the F380 in my Printer Control Panel, which I eventually delete to start the madness all over again.

I've tried restarting my computer. Uninstalling and reinstalling the software (both regular drivers and Vista drivers). Closing my laptop (standby mode) instead of turning it off to see if it would keep the printer online. EVERYTHING. But no matter what I do, I continuously have to unplug and replug to reinstall just to print.

If anyone has any suggestions to fix this, I would be forever in your debt.

Most USB printers need to have the printer driver installed before you connect the printer to the computer, did you install the printer this way?

Also, check and see if it is the default printer.

If those do not work:

1) Turn off the Terminate and Stay Resident programs MSCONFIG in VISTA.
2) Disable HP device discovery service.
3) Uninstall the All-In-One software.
4) Turn off firewall and antivirus.
5) Reinstall the latest software for the All-In-One.
Hope this helps.

F380 hp all in one

This issue occurs if the scanning files are not installed properly. Once search for the hpqscnvw.exe file and try to scan from there and check for the result. If you are able to scan then download scan diagnostic utility from the hp.com and run it. If the issue persists reinstall the software.

HP Deskjet F380 All-in-One Compatible with vista

I had the same problem. I could print, but not scan.

However, if you open up Paint and go to file and scan, it will scan your document. For some reason, using the scan button on the printer itself will not work with Vista, but using Paint will. I also heard that using Windows fax and scan will also work.
good luck
