Dell Optiplex GX270 bios will not recognise Philips SDVD8821 DVD R/RW Drive. IDE ATA / ATAPI interface. SONY CRX835E DVD / CD RW combo works fine. Do I need to update the system bios? Current version is Phoenix ROM BIOS PLUS Version 1.10 A07
Thanks for your help but I already have the latest version BIOS. I was on the Dell on-line support for over an hour tonight but they insist there's no issue with the Optiplex BIOS and Philips DVD writers.
Anyway, I have an Acer laptop that has an identical type of drive, except it's a Hitachi.
I decided to check the Philips DVD in the Acer and it works fine in there, proving it is not faulty. So then I put the Hitachi DVD from the Acer in the Dell and that works fine in there. So all is good, eventually. Thanks anyway, DaveThanks for your help but I already have the latest version BIOS.

Hello mychella513, hi, there is no need for you to find the device driver for your sony combo, because its already present in windows. If you cannot power on the device or the computer cannot detect your drive, its defective, Windows has already installed the device driver for CD/DVD for your computer.
CD/DVD Drive Missing In My Computer
1.Go to Control Panel > System > "Click Hardware Tab" > Device Manager > IDE ATA / ATAPI Controllers > Right Click then uninstall
2.Reboot
3. If the problem is still their you will need to remove the upper and lower registry keys. You can do this by following this Microsoft Knowledge base article. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060
the combo drive you listed above is a cd-rw/ DVD-ROM....meaning that it will play and burn cd, cd-r, and cd-rw disks. the dvd rom will only be able to play dvd-rom and dvd-r disks providing they are in the proper format. check that the disk in question is not a dvd-rw or (+2) disk. the drive will not recognize that a disk is in the drive if the disk isnt compatable. try a dvd movie, if that works then a dvd-r, if that works then try a dvd-rw +1. if the last option doesnt work then you will have to stick with the dvd-rom and dvd-r, or purchase a dvd-rw drive to install.
you can try two solutions
1) go to device manager and uninstall the primary and secondary ide controller under the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers and than restart the system and than chk it if that works out
2 ) if the first option doesnt work try to update the firmware of the drive
Check that the writable DVDs you are using are compatible (+/-) with your Sony DVD-RAM.
Go to Windows Explorer and check to see if the Sony drive is visible. It may not be connected or the Jumper switch may be set incorrectly.
Check you have drivers installed, take a look in Hardware manager.
Sometimes, it's a little difficult to copy CDs and DVDs when you have more than one burning suite installed - for some reason, they 'just don't get along'. Try uninstalling any suites other than Nero.
Or it may just be that your Sony CD-RW drive is just that, and your DVD-RW drive is just that. So it wouldn't be possible to write DVDs on the CD-RW and CDs on the DVD-RW? Though I would assume Nero would detect that and use your hard-drive as temporary storage.
In Nero SmartStart, have you selected the CD or DVD tab to correspond to the project you're burning?
