Ps3 will not load cd's dvd's or games. loading icon comes on but disc's dont load. when i take disc out loading icon stops but does not go away. it had the newest update.

There might be a problem with your disc drive, you could test it by instead of putting a game in your console, put a dvd or blu-ray in, if the movies load, the laser may be dirty if they don't load, then there is probably a problem with your laser and it would need to be repaired from Sony.

The Blu Ray Diode fried when you shut the power switch on in the back. The PS3 uses 2 different lasers to read disks. One for standard dvd's and cd's and one for Blu Ray. The only way to fix your PS3 is to replace the Blue Ray Diode or laser lens. I would recommend paying the $150 bucks to have sony replace unless you know something about Diodes and lasers.
If you hold down the eject button for 10 seconds it will reset your laser and then you should be able to shut the power down in back safetly.
Formatting and or resetting the hard drive won't do a thing if your diode is fried.
I found a work-around to get it to read discs though. You have to have a bluray disc in the drive (game or movie) and start a downloaded game or Playstation Home. Once the game or Home loads, hit the PS button on the controller. The crossbar menu will pull up and you will notice the disc icon will (magically) pop up. Click the quit game icon. Once you are out of the downloaded game or Home the disc icon will still be there. You can then load the game or disc. The icon will remain there until you eject the disc, so you will have to repeat this every time you want to load a game.
Check What Resolution You Have Saved On the PS3 Maybe When It goes Blu-Ray Its To High Res For The Standard TV..

You've done everything I would have done honestly. Take a can of air and blow it into the drive to make sure dirt or dust isn't on the laser which could affect if it sees discs or not.

The better thing to try if you are good at opening up your ps3 and then removing your drive and opening that is to take a damp q-tip with a bit of glass cleaner and clean your laser in the drive gently. Then put the drive back together and hook the cables back up to the ps3. You can leave the cover to the ps3 off for this step. Turn on the ps3 and try different blu-ray, dvd's, music cd's, game discs, etc. If it still doesn't read any of them then either the laser or the drive i bad. If it reads some discs and not others then its a weak laser and the laser would need to be replaced.

If you have to replace the laser or the drive, you can do a search on Ebay and usually find them fairly cheap.

yup laser is done. direct replacement part # is KEM-400AAA if sent to sony the flat rate will be around 180. sucks i know. i sent mine in but it comes back with a little warranty. repairing yourself is pretty hard ive done it. hope that helps.

If that doesn't work then its either going to be a bad laser in the dvd drive or main board inside of the dvd drive that is bad. You can order replacement lasers for your ps3 dvd drive on Ebay or you can replace the whole drive as well and find those on Ebay.

I'm sorry to say but sounds like it is a bad Blu-Ray drive. When that goes out and its not playing anything you gotta contact Sony for a replacement.
