Windows XP does not natively have software to decode DVD video (thus the garbled video). You need to install a third-party DVD codec. Typically with Compaqs it came with PowerDVD or WinDVD that, once installed, allows you to view DVDs using their viewer or even media player.

Look through your CDs that came with your PC and see if there is one for WinDVD or PowerDVD and install it. Sometimes it will be on a CD labelled drivers or additional software.

Hope this helps,
-Tor

CD disk is plays, but DVD disk in no playing,,sometimes dvd plays, mostly no disk

try cleaning the laser lense
If you have a dirty lense it can still read cd because data is not as compressed on dvd, each byte of data takes up far less space on a dvd so the dirty lense might not pick it up whereas it might pick it up on a dvd

Dvd medie player

It seems you don't have any codecs... The problem is not in windows media player.
Just install a codec pack like http://www.free-codecs.com/download/codec_pack_all_in_1.htm

Hope to solve your problem.

The video file you try to open might not be a proper video/audio format.

If you insist on using the GOM Player, you have to install the codec from http://www.free-codecs.com/index.htm,

Suggestion,
Install the "K-Lite Mega Codec Pack" or "K-Lite Codec Pack" to your PC/Laptop.

Alternatively you can install Free media players like VLC Media Player Or MPCStar Player which will play most of the Audio/video formats.

Compaq DVD Player problem

You need a new DVD codec. If you have a copy of WinDVD, give it an install. Otherwise, try the free codec on www.divx.com.
