Compaq DVD Player problem

My compaq Turion Portable Technology laptop's media player doesnt play dvds with sound. Is there any way to fix this? i have windows vista installed on my laptop. Music and videos already on their play fine, its just dvd's please help!!! I have a ACER Aspire 3000 the Windows Media Player plays and sound the audio CDs but theres no sound when I play a DVD you can see the movie but you can not hear it.

Try to download some free DVD player programs on your computer and they are designed for decoding DVD discs, unlike regular video players. You could try Leawo Blu-ray Player which can play both Blu-ray and DVD discs.

You need a new DVD codec. If you have a copy of WinDVD, give it an install. Otherwise, try the free codec on www.divx.com.

are you able to play anything on this DVD player ? try video/song you burned on it last . if it doesnt play, you will have to replace the DVD burner

Will not play any DVD

Turn off and disconnect power from unit. Check laser shuttle worm gear, look for dirt or hair (as I found). Remove with tweezers carefully. Check lubrication of worm gear shaft. If gone or worn, use white lithium grease to lube (very little). Play music CD 2 - 3 x. Than DVD. Worked for me.
