it is probably because your sister has a different version of R4. They are the same things, but your sister might have an earlier version than you do. This is because, some versions dont work with some ds lites while others do.
Your game slot is probably dirty. You first trying blowing in it and see if that dislodges enough dirt to allow a game to start. Either way you want to buy a DS Lite game slot cleaning kit and clean the connectors in the slot. Also, make sure you clean the game contacts as well. If they have dirt on them it will get stuck on the contacts in the console when you put it in to play it. DON'T use alcohol to clean games or the ds slot. Buy a kit.
i think you should either get a new ds or tap the touch screen hard. if tapping the touch sreen harder does not work then that means it is time for a new ds.

There is a small latch on the connector that may be stuck. Try this. Turn the DS Lite upside down with the charger plug facing away from you. Press down the on the plug gently with your right thumb and with your left hand pull the connect away from the socket. FYI this should be a simple fit! Make sure the connector was not jammed in upside down to start with. It has a clear six sided shape to it!
never do things like that.did your ds lite come with a ac adapter?did you check in the box?if not call the nintendo experts 1-800-255-3700.they will either take it out and send it back to you or give you a new one (and u must pay if they cannot take it out)
If yours is the NDS Lite, just find this video in youtube:
"Disassembling Nintendo DS Lite"
And after opening it you may need to replace or try to repair the audio plug. In case you cant, then you must take it out (desoldering it with the stuck stylus tip and the mute switch, which is embeded in the headphone jack) and you can have your audio back. As the audio switch and the jack only work to mute the speakers audio usually when you plug a headphone then you can lack of it almost all times.
