I have a westinghouse 32" tv and started smelling a burning smell. Then heard a pop and the picture went out. I've read on this website that it could be a defective transformer so i checked and sure enough it is. Is this a part that I can replace or is the tv trash now?

Your backlight inverter board has failed. This may be due to a bad capacitor which is easy to repair, or the inverter transformer may have burned out, in which case it may be replaceable or the complete inverter board will need to be replaced.

you can start doing the diagnostic, but let it rest a bit. then, try it again. if nothing, you will have to disassemble it and check for fuses in the power card to begin.
Hello, it sounds like you need to replace the inverter board on this unit. I would recommend opening the unit from the back cover, get the part # for the inverter board (long green board normally running accross the edge of the TV) and go to www.shopjimmy.com, they should have it in stock and if not you can try www.invertercentral.com, they should also have it.
The problem may cause by the defective transformer on Power supply board. there are 3 transformers on the power supply. http://www.lcdparts.net/LIPSInverterDetail.aspx?InverterOriginal=4H.B0700.051 Please do the vision inspection on power supply, you should be able see the obvious burn on one of these three big transformers.
Well that pop had something to do with the power components inside the TV frying. I would have to say there is nothing you can do to repair it as its dangerous to work on such things. I wouln't waste my time bringing it to a repair shop they will probably tell you to just buy a new one.
heard a pop sound -- then the set went dead -- no lights, no nothing, and then there was a slight electrical burn smell coming from the back of the set :(
