I'de suggest you replace the dvd rom.
Well there could be software and hardward problem there. It might be the software is not communicating with the dvd-rom. What you can do is try upgrading the dvd driver.
What is the brand of DVD you are using? If you were ever able to burn dvd's maybe you need to see if the brand you are trying to use now is causing this problem. It could also be the lense gone for reading DVD. Are you able to read CD's.
