I'm running my laptop on

Here is what I suggest. I would go ahead and upgrade your OS. Windows Vista actually has worse performance than Windows 7/8/10. I recommend installing via USB flash drive. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/windows-usb-dvd-download-tool If you really can't get your hands on an upgraded OS. Here is a link that might help you to resolve your problem: No CD Rom drive in Device Manager No error reported by XP Windows XP Otherwise I think it might be a driver issue. If you could supply the product serial I could point you to some proper drivers.

Hl-dt-st dvdram gsa-t40n ata device driver curupted

Problem occurs when vista registry entry is corrupted. The steps to resolve this are as follows:
  • run regedit.exe
  • navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
  • Depending on your particular setup, you may have multiple entries for {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}. If this is the case, find the one that says DVD/CD-ROM drives (under default)
  • Once you have found the appropriate key, you will see an entry that says UpperFilters.
  • Delete this key and then restart
  • (NB: Do not delete any other 'UpperFilters' key that is not in the category of DVD/CD-ROM drives, otherwise you may get the BSOD.)
This solution fixed my problem.
