You can try to delete upper and lower filters for your system. go to start>run>type in regedit click ok> start looking for this parth HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318},when click on the folder look on the right column and look for upper/lower filters and delete it. restart system. Try updating the firmware of the optical drive depending on the model.
caution:be careful with deleting registry for your system this might affect your operating system functionality.

Won't play music CDs
This may be a hardware problem - my drive was not recognizing any CDs, but read and played DVDs fine. There are separate CD and DVD detectors, and over time, one or the other may drift out of spec. I found a solution posted elsewhere on this site: If you remove the drive from the machine and open the drive tray, you'll see a metal plate held in place by three black screws. With a small (2mm) Phillips screwdriver, remove the plate. Gently lift the flat ribbon to the side and you'll see two very small potentiometers that can be adjusted with the same screwdriver. For a CD problem turn the one closer to the front of the drive about 1/8 turn clockwise, close everything up and try the drive again. You may have to repeat the procedure a couple of times before it reaches the right setting (mine took two tries). (The other pot controls the DVD reader.)

My toshiba laptop satellite A215-s7422 doesn"t play anymore
Assuming you have tried various DVD's & CD's sounds like a bad CD/DVD drive. These use a lens mounted on a moveable mount to focus the laser beam and over time the mount gets worn out and the beam can no longer focus so the drive can no longer read the DVD/CD. Should hear the DVD speed up then slow down and maybe a loud vibrating noise (Lens trying to focus). Can try a laser lens cleaner - you can get them at Best Buy, but if that does not work then a new DVD drive is in order. If you can change it yourself then you might find one on ebay used for @$25 otherwise a trip to the computer repair shop.

Dvd burner not working
It sounds like the DVD burner does not have a "write strategy" for the type of disc you are using. This results in the burner and the software having an endless argument about how to go about the burn!
You can either use another brand of disc more compatible with your burner or go to the DVD burner's manufacturer's website and check for "Firmware" updates.
The firmware is the software within the drive that establishes the write strategy for each type of disc and these are often updated.
If you do update the firmware then be sure to read the instructions on the manufacturers website carefully and follow them EXACTLY.

Cant open dvd drawer
Sometimes DVD player drawers get stuck closed because the disc inside isn't seated properly. At other times the player may have another problem. The first step in discovering if it is the disc or another issue is to remove the disc. Most DVD players have a secret eject button. It allows you to open the drawer when a disc gets stuck and cannot be ejected normally.
For this you'll need a standard size paperclip.
- Unfold the paperclip and make it as straight as possible.
- Look closely at your DVD player . Push the tip the paper clip into the small hole on the tray cover on the front of the Toshiba. The hole is on the right side of the cover.
- Press inward gently with the paperclip until you feel a slight resistance, then continue pushing to engage the internal eject button. The tray should pop open partway.
- Gently pull the drawer until it's fully retracted. Be careful not to pull too far.
- Remove your disc from the drive.
- Before you reinsert another disc, use the remote and/or buttons on the player to close the door, and reopen it. You can also press carefully with your fingers. If you cannot open/close the drawer normally at this point, do not put in a new disc until you have repaired the problem.
