Do you have it properly connected? If this is a serial ATA then you would not connect a ribbon cable. Just the ATA power and data cables. Hope this helps.

Problem occurs when vista registry entry is corrupted. The steps to resolve this are as follows:

  • run regedit.exe
  • navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
  • Depending on your particular setup, you may have multiple entries for {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}. If this is the case, find the one that says DVD/CD-ROM drives (under default)
  • Once you have found the appropriate key, you will see an entry that says UpperFilters.
  • Delete this key and then restart
  • (NB: Do not delete any other 'UpperFilters' key that is not in the category of DVD/CD-ROM drives, otherwise you may get the BSOD.)
This solution fixed my problem.

Straightforward and clearly noted first line DVD CD ROM on the relevant registry entry. Thanks.

  • am1407 Dec 04, 2010

    Bravo mkpelletier.

Mkpelletier--great advice!! I called toshiba though, because it still did not fix the problem. Found out from Toshiba that not only do you need to delete the upperfilters but the LOWER filters as well. Otherwise, these instructions are perfect!!

great job mkpelletier!!

I even bought a new laptop last month out of disgust, but thought I'd give it one more try today. His solution worked perfectly!! Thanks mpelletier - you should have a website of your own, and when you do, come back here and let us know!!!!!!!!!

Having trouble with my DVD RW Device its not reconizing any of audio CD or DVD CD on my computer its showing that it wants to come on I also have my computer set on Auto Play it not reconizing it at all if...

get a CD/DVD cleaner. This is a CD with a small brush embedded into it. This will clean the dust from the laser lens. I've used one to restore drives over the past 20 years. Unfortunately, if this doesn't work, you may have to purchase a new drive.
You can get the cleaner at Radio Shack or Wal-Mart.

Good Luck,
Mark

My satellite won't recognize a cd/dvd drive when I open up my computer there isn't a drive at all how can I fix this

If you don't have a cd/dvd rom drive installed on your laptop then of course your laptop would not reconize a cd/dvd rom. Is you laptop a Netbook, usually netbook does not come with a cd/dvd drive. To solve this case, you will need to buy an external cd/dvd drive and hook it up via USB.

OS is Windows XP Professional CD drive will not reconize a DVD+R for recording data. The drive is a HL-D-ST CDRW/DVD GCC4244.

A CDRW/DVD is a CD-burner and DVD-ROM combined unit. It is not meant to record DVDs only CDs.

It will not recognise a blank DVD as it is unable to read any file system.

you have to remember to set the Jumpers on the drive to assigh it Master or Slave,  if this is not done it will conflict with the other drive on the IDE cable, (you would usually match the setting of the drive you removed)

This setting is assigned using a jumper on a block of six pins which is usually located next to the 40 pin IDE connector.
