New freezer not cooling - temp @ 25 degrees and food is defrosted

We have a new freezer (less than 6 months old) - model #FKFH21FHW. Twice in the last 3 weeks the freezer has failed to cool. We removed all the food the first time and unplugged the unit for several hours. All seemed okay after plugging it back in and the temp stayed at 0 degrees for the last three weeks. We started putting food back in within the last 48 hours. Now...the temp is rising agan (25 degrees) and all the food is defrosted. The door is opened 2-3 times per day for 3-4 seconds (max) at a time. What could be wrong?

It is probably the control board and since it's new it's still under warranty so a certified Frigidaire repair man will fix it without charge. There should be a telephone number with the paperwork you received when you bought it.

Our Kenmore 253.28432801 is just over 5 years old. It stopped freezing, and the Sears tech says it has a leak and needs coils and a condenser. This would be $618, he suggested we buy a new freezer. Co

If it's holding at 28 degrees, it's not the coils. See if dropping the temp does any thing to lower the temp. If it does, fine. If not, most likely just the control needs replaced or just cleaned.

Defrost cycles

Defrost cycle usually comes on after about 7 hours. If it is happening every 30 minutes or so, the defrost timer is not working properly and your internal temperature will never have a chance to go down to zero as SOP.

When defrost cycle comes on, the compressor is automatically shut off and internal freezer temps can go up by close to 25 degrees or more. It is for this reason that commercial freezers do not have auto defrost - the latter extols a price, convenience at the price of higher average temps and less time to properly store foodstuffs in freezer.

Freezer wont go below -9 degrees

This information does not mean anything to us if you didn't specify the model. In what temperature range a freezer works we knew thanks to the stars.
One star (-6 degrees centigrade) is perfect for making ice cubes and is sufficiently cold to keep food for three or four days.
** Two stars (-12 degrees centigrade) stores food for fifteen to twenty days.
*** Three stars (-18 degrees centigrade) will keep food safe for up to three months.
**** Four stars (below 18 degrees centigrade) means that the compartment provides the ideal conditions for freezing down fresh and pre-cooked foods.

I have a General Freezer,Ltd model 16 Upright and it shuts itself off periodically without my being aware . When I see food defrosting , I am able to restart the unit by tapping on the temp control dial...

You need to replace the temperature control, (unless you find a bad wire connection to the temp control first). You can find a control that is close enough at any appliance parts store, bring the old one in for a match up. Make sure it is NOT a 39 degree constant cut in type and you will want a differential of at least 6 or 8 degrees minimum so that it wont "short cycle" which means it would run for a few minutes, shut off for a few then run again before the high side pressure comes down.

It seems that the temp more often goes up to 20-30's and that food is not as frozen when I check it. When temp goes up I check it for next couple of minutes and usually within 10 min the temp is back down...

This is normal. All commercfial freezers must defrost 3 to 5 times a day, or they will freeze over at the coil and then stop freezing. A timer in your freezer turns off the compressor and turns a heating element on for 10 to 15 minutes. During that time the coil heats and melts frost from the coil. Usually within 30 minutes the temperature will briefly rise to 20 t0 25 degrees F and then quickly drop down to 0 degrees F. The food rarely defrosts in this short period of time..

Freezer defrost cycle

If the defrost timer sticks in the defrost mode, yes. Normal defrost time is 30 minutes or less depending upon which timer is installed.
If it happens again, locate the defrost timer and turn the dial manually to see if the compressor comes back on. If so,replace the timer.
It is probably on the rear near the compressor. Some are under the front behind the dust guard.

Temp changes in freezer

If the temperature fluctuations occur (at least the ones to 20-30 degrees) at intervals of 6 hours or so then you are catching it in it's defrost mode which occurs on a timer. The timer shuts off everything except lights every 6 hours for an average of 20 minutes. This usually isn't enough to thaw things but I have seen it cause some crystale. Look closely at the back inside wall of the freezer for an accumulation of frost. If you see it there then you may have a defrost problem. Usually this is accompanied by steadily rising temperature in the freezer and fresh food secions both. The temps you listed (0to10) are fine. Good luck, AJ

Proper temp. range in freezer

Hi dgh1,
The freezer should stay within 5 degrees of 0 while in operation. While in defrost the freezer may reach as high as 20 to 25 degrees. If any higher temperatures are reached your food will spoil as they are defrosted and refroze everyday. If you find that the temperature is allowing your food to defrost you may want to replace your defrost thermostat. This device is located on top of the evaperator coil inside the back of the freezer. It is made to turn the heater off when a temperature of 55 degrees is reached. One other possible problem could be your defrost timer is taking to long to restart the cooling cycle after defrosting. I hope this will help you and please send any other questions you may have, I am happy to help. and dont forget to rate me.
