There is also a circuit protector which trips if something gets caught in the roller, so that might be the problem. There is a very small red button on the right side at the bottom of the vacuum (IT'S VERY TINY), and you just push that in and it will reset the circuit.

The beater bar belt is probably broken. Take the cover off the beater bar and you'll probably see it immediately.

I replaced my Bissell vacuum cleaner belt with a Bissell belt. I ordered it from them so I know it's the right one. I replaced it and the roller won't spin and the belt smells like it burning.

Beckiande485:

You will need to unplug the vacuum from the wall, lay it down so you can see the bottom of the vacuum head and remove the bottom plate (foot plate) Probably philllips head screws. pull up on the roller (called the beater bar). The beater bar will come straight up. Disconnect the belt and check the fittings at the ends of the beater bar... I'll bet that they don't spin easily (The fittings have roller bearings in them, and the roller bearings get gunked up with hair, carpet fibers and dirt). Pull the end fittings off of the roller and remove all of the hair and carpet fibers off of the end of the beater bar and the fittings and out of the bearings. Check to make sure that the roller bearings spin freely. If they do not spin freely, put some rubbing alcohol in the bearing (you can pour it onto the bearing and spin the bearing manually until it spins freely, or you can use a spray bottle with alcohol in it as I do. Once the bearing spin freely, dry them out so no alcohol remains in the bearing, then a drop or two of light machine oil (3 in 1 oil will do) in each bearing and spin the bearing again to distribute the oil. Now would be a good time to check for any clogs in the vacuum head where the hose connects, and check the hose for clogs. Reassemble the beater bar and reinstall it in the vacuum with a new belt, reinstall the foot plate.

Your machine should run like new.

It smells like it's burning when I vacum/what's wrong with it

Tammy May:

Unplug the machine and remove the foot plate (at the bottom of the vacuum head) and check the belt that drives the beater brush/bar. if the beater bar is hard to turn, pull the beater bar and belt out, check the inside circumference of the belt to see if the motor shaft has worn it down in one spot. If so, remove the two bearings (one at each end of the beater bar) and remove the hair, carpet fibers, strings and any other junk from the bearings and the ends of the beater bar. lubricate the bearings with oil (thin machine oil like 3 in 1 oil works best. roll the bearings with your hands until they spin freely. Now would be a good time to check the bottom of the foot plate where the dirt is vacuumed up. check the hole in the middle of the foot plate and check the hose for clogs if the hole and foot plate hole are clear, reassemble the bearings on the beater bar and install the beater bar (with a new belt) and reinstall the foot plate. The machine should run well for you.

Roller will not turn

Conmaur102:

I don't know what type of vacuum you have, but you should check the drive belt to see if it is damaged. Remove the sole plate (at the bottom of the head) and remove the belt and roller (called the beater bar). check the bearings at each end of the beater bar (they must roll easily and smoothly). If they are bound up, pull them off of the ends of the beater bar and remove the hair, strings, and fibers wound around the end of the beater bar. Lubricate the bearings with light machine oil, and spin them by hand until they spin freely. Reinstall the belt and beater bar, and reinstall the sole plate. While you are at it... check the hose and head to make sure they are not clogged.

I have a model 3241, vacum has suction power but roller is not spinning.

I am assuming the motor in the power nozzle is running, right?

Please unplug the machine first and then check if the roller turns freely.
If it does, then likely the little belt either slipped off the motor or it broke.

I own a Kenmore vacuum cleaner model # 116. 56550990C. I have lost the instructions to replace the belt in the Power Mate. The Power Mate beater just stopped working and I need instructions on how to...

If unit beater has stopped working it is either the motor, the power connection to beater or the belt that powers the roller. Which is it?

See if you can download the manual from the mfg or google for it.

New noise when vac is run

mine was allowing the roller/beater bar to hit the cover as it turned take the cover back off and ensure the beater is in the right place then that the cover is locked in the right place then you can spin it by hand (power cord unplugged of course) and make sure it is clearing everything. BTW, the belt has to be stretched to get the beater bar in place like on most vac.s

Beater brush will not spin and head drops down without using foot release

You didn't provide the model number so couldn't look it uo, but sOme of the progressive uprights have a circuit breaker on, it will trip when something catches on the brush roll, push it to see if it will reset, if there isn't one, get me the model, it will start 116.*********
