The larger batteries should have made them run for longer on a single charge. They aren't 35 amp batteries, they are 35 amp *hour*. 12 volts is the thing that matters. Check the batteries are correctly fitted and make sure the motors are clean. The fact they go down faster is puzzling and for that, I would exchange the batteries as they sound faulty.
Answer Edited for clarity. However, the motors are now the issue.

Double check to be sure drive levers are fully engaged. Go down and up a few times. If problem persists have Hoveround come and check it out. One of the drive motors may have shorted out when you continued driving with gravel in the wheel.
Disconnect cables going from battery boxes to the control box. There is probably a catch that needs to be squeezed in, then pull and wigglt the connection block until it disengages. Release the straps over the battery boxes then remove batteries and covers. Lift up on the cover (you may need to push some cable back into the box) and put cover aside. Disconnect cables from batteries and attach to the new batteries. Same procedure, in reverse, gets you back to an operational MPV5.
If you plug the charger into the wall, turn on the power switch and the light comes on, the charger should be working properly. Here is a way to test it-
Attach the charger that came with the power chair to the power chair controller firmly and turn the power chair on, while the charger is running. What should happen:the lights on the controller will scroll back and forth. If this does NOT happen and you can confirm the charger is turned on, the charger handle is fully seated inside the controller receptacle and the wall outlet has power, then the charger may have a problem and needs to be replaced.
If the charger is OK, then there may be a problem with the batteries. Here are some sypmtoms:
1-You connect the charger but the light on the charger never goes red, it just stays green.
2-You connect the charger but the light goes from red to green VERY fast.
3-The charger light goes from red to green but when you disconnect the charger and press the power button on the controller, you only have one flashing red light, or the batteries drain within just a few minutes of use.
4-The power chair has been stored or sitting idle for several months.
5- The power chair has been connected to the charger 24-7 for several months.
Any of the above examples indicates that the batteries are oxidized or damaged and will most likely need to be replaced. The MPV5 takes two, U1 12 volt 33 amp batteries which can be purchased at any battery warehouse store like Interstate Batteries or Batteries Plus.
Good luck!
If the power chair was stored for a while, the batteries may have gone bad. There is a gel inside them that needs to be put on a current regularly or it will solidify. When you connect the charger, you get a green light because it senses the batteries are full; unfortunately they are full of crud, not power. Try replacing the batteries to see if that solves the issue. You can probably take them to an auto parts store or Interstate Batteries to have them volt tested. The type of battery you need is a U1, 12volt, 33amp and you will need 2 of them. Good luck!
You will need to take it in for repair. 8 bar flash usually means you
have a bad joystick/controller. They can sometimes send it in to the
manufacturer to have it repaired. Find a reputable dealer and relay
this info to them.
